Meet Boise Thomas of How’s Your Heart? in Venice

Today we’d like to introduce you to Boise Thomas.

Boise, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
For as long as I can remember I have been trying to have conversations with humans. Sometimes they are monologues, other times dialogues and mostly interviews starting with “What’s your story?” That led to becoming a professional broadcaster from age 15-25. My love of people and adventure led to becoming a tour guide for America, which landed me a job in international travel sales living in the EU. My postal code was prophetic: TN1 2LA. I arrived in 1997 to pursue my dream act in TV commercials and do stand up comedy. Less than 20yrs later I had booked 144 TV commercials, spent 4yrs hosting stand up at The Comedy Store and developed my own course to teach actors how to book work. What became clear is as much as I love acting and making people laugh, adventure and travel… my main passion has always been listening to people tell me their story and providing them with what they need to pursue their passion and live a purpose filled life. And that is all I do now… ask questions, give guidance and create maps for people to stay true to who they are.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My lifelong battle with depression has been my biggest challenge. I finally gave in on January 23, 2017, by checking myself into UCLA Medical Center’s ER. Crying every two hours for 21 days with 4 hours of sleep a night will break any human’s will but it was not something new. It was just the worst it had ever been. I am grateful for that bottom for it has become the foundation from which I have been building the rest of my life. Since then I’ve realized the importance of self-care, self-love and sleep hygiene. For a guy who spent a lot of time in bed between successes, I finally am focused and disciplined on taking life one day at a time… awakening, be grateful I didn’t die in my sleep, making my bed, take care of myself and reaching out to others who may be dealing with anxiety, love or purpose.

Some days are still challenging but I remember to see the opportunity for service. Being great with people begins with being great with ourselves. We can’t do this alone. Or, speaking to a volleyball. Trust the sun will rise and when it does, you have a fresh start and who knows what changes that day may have in store for you. For us all.

How’s Your Heart? – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
As an adult Guidance Counselor, my x-factor is providing clarity for those who seek purpose, direction and want to know what’s next. I do this through two different techniques developed in the writing of my upcoming book: How’s Your Heart? It’s an Operations Manual for Being Human. There is the #HYHMethod, that lifts any human from any undesirable emotional state in just 8 questions. The other is TO-STORY-FORTH, an 89 question interview that reveals how you were made, who made you and what you were uniquely made to offer the world.

Both of these offerings fell out of the pages of the manual which editors and friends have told me reads like Ram Dass’ BE HERE NOW, meets Uncle Shelby’s WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS and flows like a set of LEGO instructions.

What sets this work apart from life coaching is something I hear often in sessions: “your ability to listen, explain and recreate what I am feeling and thinking even when I am unable to find the words is as if you can hear my thoughts through the noise.” Feels pretty good to know what I am supposed to do with the rest of my life and that is what my work provides for others. Crazy but it’s true.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is practicing something long enough, others ask you to teach them how to do it. So success for me is becoming a teacher. What the student quickly realizes is the teacher became a master only through the practice and failures. They mastered something not because they are special or talented but because they never gave up.

And that persistence required a tremendous amount of patience, focus, and discipline. I am currently working on being a successful human being. My definition is a person who practices kindness, compassion, and being a contribution to humanity so well, you can’t even tell that’s what they are doing. I hope the manual gives people a new practice in being kind, compassionate and good to themselves first and in turn, interested in teaching that to the rest of Us.

After all… the best way to learn something is to teach it.
