Today we’d like to introduce you to BOI BAND.
Based out of Los Angeles, CA, BOI BAND is an all queer pop vocal cover band. They are a tribute to boy bands of past and present that we all know and love, as well as a few LGBTQ+ artists and allies that have helped shape the culture. BOI BAND is comprised of 5 talented people of various sexual orientations and gender identities, representing the beauty and diversity of the queer community. BOI BAND was created to fill a void of queer representation in live music — performances by LGBTQ+ folks and for that same community. The band hopes to inspire love, visibility, self-acceptance and be a voice in the movement to full equality through their music and performances.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not obstacles or struggles, per se, but in ways challenges, yes. When we had auditions, we were very intentional about making sure the talent was there but also that everyone shares in the vision of BOI BAND — positive, uplifting, and FUN queer entertainment. When you involve five different, strong, creative personalities, things could very easily split into different directions. We were fortunate that we all believe in BOI BAND’s vision and message.
We were created for live performances and were gearing up for the biggest summer of events to really launch our presence but then we all know what happened to halt the world as we know it! Our biggest challenge thus far has been navigating the new world of virtual events, but thankfully, the LGBTQ community has been finding ways to bring people together even at home. We’ve been fortunate to have been invited to participate in several virtual pride events and really enjoy staying connected to the community. BOI BAND is very excited to relaunch live events when it’s safe — stay home and stay healthy!
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
BOI BAND is proud to be one of the first of its kind — an all-queer, androgynous, vocal pop cover band that brings visibility and representation to live music. Each member of BOI BAND has a unique style, personality, talent, and beauty that they bring to the band. Our diversity is what makes BOI BAND so special.
Sonya is the creator and visionary behind BOI BAND, adding her vocal talents and passion for pop music and performance. Kayden is a multi-talented singer/songwriter with unique sound and strong vocals. Jamie brings her incredible hip-hop skills to the pop genre and so much energy to the stage. Betsy has a larger-than-life personality which shows on and off the stage; her positivity brings a special energy to the band. Kristin (aka DJ LIVEWIRE) is a master behind the deck — her raw musical mixing skills keep the audience dancing!
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We want to keep building on our live performances — there are so many songs and new choreography that we haven’t had the chance to bring to new audiences yet. As we continue to grow as a band, we will create original music, record some singles and release more music videos. We want to be a staple in the pride circuit with our live performances, and inspire love, visibility, and self-acceptance around the world.
