Today we’d like to introduce you to Bobby Brown.
Bobby, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After years of being envious of the supportive community of mothers that my wife had surrounded herself with, I started having this vision of fathers coming together in the same way. Among the many amazing and wonderful things my mother-in-law does within the world of birthwork, I was always most grateful for the postpartum support groups she facilitates because I got to witness how beneficial it was to my wife’s personal healing and growth. My wife always came home after group happier, lighter and more present. I wanted that. So I started looking for similar groups for dad’s but couldn’t find any. Then after always talking about the lack of support for fathers, my mother-in-law offered for me to use her space, KindredSpaceLA (KindredSpaceLA.com), to create my own thus Dad’s with Donuts was created in January 2019.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle I came across was getting other dad’s interested and open to coming out. They usually found out about DWD through their partners which didn’t necessarily make them excited about checking it out lol.
Please tell us about Donuts With Dad’s.
Donuts with Dad’s is an Inglewood rooted father’s support group with donuts and coffee. We simply create a safe space for dads to come together with their little ones and be present. We pride ourselves in honoring the fact that fathers need and want support too.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I remember that my Uncle Robert would dress up as Santa every year on Christmas Eve. The suit, climbing on the roof, no chimney, but he had all the gifts. Now that I’m a dad, I really try to make the holidays a special time for our family because of how my Uncle did Christmas for my cousins and I. I’m not putting the suit on and all that though ha …..well unless my daughter’s make me do it.
