Today we’d like to introduce you to Binder of Women.
Binder of Women, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Conceptualized in Los Angeles by painter Hilary Pecis, Binder of Women, an artist run- project providing an independent platform for contemporary artists to directly share their work as they see fit. This is a unified move to empower female artists, expand their reach, broach the topic of equality and consent in the art world, and take action to grow the number of works by female identifying artists in contemporary art collections.
The first project by the Binder of Women was a collective folio of limited edition works. by artists Hayley Barker, Michelle Blade, Claire Colette, Jamie Felton, Kysa Johnson, Lindsey Lyons, Maysha Mohamedi, Erin Morrison, Laurie Nye, and Hilary Pecis have contributed works on paper ranging from representational and unique paintings to abstract and gestural forms with pressed paper for this first release. The project offered twenty limited edition sets containing a signed work by each of the ten artists.
Since then, we have exhibited in several exhibitions as a group, invited other artists like Bruna Massadas to join the group, and curated additional shows with artists outside of our immediate group.
Has it been a smooth road?
As we have only been banded together for a year, I would say it has been a pretty smooth road. Once we sorted out the details for our first project and started posting info on social media, we received a pretty good response. The Pit, a gallery in Glendale offer to host our print release party, and we ended up doing pretty well moving our portfolio edition set.
A funny thing happened with the group, as it has been a bit easier for us to ask for what we want. As each of us are roughly only 1/10th or 1/11th of the group, the potential for rejection feels far less of a personal insult. We have some upcoming exciting projects that were a result of asking for what we want, which would have not come about on their own. It is really a good lesson for all of us as individuals.
As far as obstacles and challenges, those were mostly in the form of learning curves. We had to put together a website, write press releases, and package our product. All of the members of the group were able to offer some contribution in regards to these issues, but the final results often came in the form of trial and error.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Binder of Women story. Tell us more about the business.
