Today we’d like to introduce you to Bill Czappa.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am an artist and opened the shop to support my artwork. I have always supported myself in electronic repair so it was a natural choice. The shop became a place to sore my art over the years and became sort of a local landmark with people stopping by just to see the work. We are now one of the oldest repair shops and art galleries in Burbank. With over 14000 people on our mailing list and great reviews we are one of the most popular repair cents in the valley. Repair everything from lamps to LCD TV sets. People send us VCRs from as far away as Iraq, New York and Kansas because hardly anyone is still repairing these things. We also do a lot of vintage electronics as well. Our shop has also been rented out to the studios for Man Up and just a few weeks ago, a Hulu show “Casual”.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has become very rough as late trying to get parts and find people who know how to repair things. Cheap products from abroad has damaged the service industry in the USA.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the ARC TV story. Tell us more about the business.
We repair most home electronics from lamps to Bigscreen TV sets. We are one of the few shops that still repair VRS and vintage stereo equipment of all kinds including Tube type TV sets and stereos. Having the art here also makes us very unusual besides. We also repair small appliances and even take in vintage Christmas decorations on occasion. If we can get a part we will take in most items. We do microwave ovens but not refrigerators or stoves. We also sell new and used electronics.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
It is a dying industry because things are getting too cheap. The vintage electronics though have increased as there is not many people around to take them in. As people rediscover Phonographs and even cassette decks those items are increasing.
