Meet Bill Applebaum of Actors Improv Studio in North Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bill Applebaum.

Bill, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my improv life onstage in Chicago at The Second City Theater, many years ago. My improv teaching began while employed at The Second City Theater, running improv workshops around the country. After moving to Los Angeles, (many years ago) someone asked me if I’d run some improv workshops and I said yes, (a basic tenet of improv is to say yes!) and the Actors Improv Studio was started.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Yes, it’s been smooth. Particularly the last 10 years or so, as more and more people have understood the benefits of what improvisation has to offer, not only for people in the entertainment field, but for people in any area where they might have to speak or do presentations. And of course, it’s also just fun.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Actors Improv Studio – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are known for helping people learn to the art of improvisation. What sets us apart from other “improv schools” is we actually focus on the individual and their strengths and weaknesses. Most of the improv schools are quite competitive. We aren’t.

Improvisation is not a blood sport, or a competition. Improvisation is about supporting each other on stage. It’s difficult enough to improvise, one shouldn’t feel one is being judged competitively while learning how to improvise. Our classes offer a very supportive environment where everyone can learn and succeed at improv.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
To continue to offer a safe, supportive environment helping people to learn the art of improvisation.
