Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The Sweet Dreams journey has not been smooth, and struggles have been experienced along the way. I describe my personal experiences with entrepreneurship as walking into a huge kitchen alone, attempting to make a dish I have never had before. Not always having the cooking utensils I need, a sous chef for assistance, nor the knowledge of all the methods the recipe requires. Yet… I have passionately persisted in the hot a** kitchen, fully embracing ambiguity, and will continue to whisk my way through every challenging step until my masterpieces are served.
The struggles have added the secret sauce I needed.
The biggest challenge in my continued pursuit is: MOTHERHOOD. “They” were right: There ain’t no ‘hood like motherhood!!!
Balancing motherhood, being in partnership with my husband’s businesses,… while also seeing the visions I have to fruition. NOT. EASY. But it is also the biggest inspiration… and I’m grateful. Mothers are f*cking Super Heroes, for real!!!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar with what you do, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a writer/storyteller before all else and consider myself a gastrodiplomat. Meaning I reach hearts and minds through food. Food is my tool to communicate.
BUT I’LL ALSO SAY… my greatest creations are my two daughters (ages 6 and 10).
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I’ve taken risks on business. I’ve taken risks on people. I’ve taken risks on myself. And I’ll continue to bet on me!
One of the biggest risks has been quitting my job to start culinary school. It made absolutely no sense to most people around me… but through prayer and confirmation that I personally needed alone, I took the leap.
With every risk, I stir optimism into a bowl that is oftentimes filled with my own tears. I fold joy into that dough that has oftentimes been filled with disappointment. I continue to bake and believe my visions/business ventures/goals will rise!!!
The critical ingredient to my risk-taking is commitment. The sacrifice HAS to be teamed with unwavering commitment and focus.
