Meet Om Bleicher of bG Gallery in Santa Monica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Om Bleicher.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am half Australian and have lived there most my life. I fell in love with the Wild West LA art scene when I was visiting family in Southern California and decided to stick around. I noticed a group of artists that didn’t fit into the academic vs low brow divide at the time and started attempting to bridge that by managing them and getting them shows. Eventually that snowballed into dealing and our first gallery space.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been and remains a rollercoaster in an ever changing and highly variable industry.

We are a bootstrap operation so capital and cash flow for growth is always a challenge; two steps forward one step back. Balancing commerce with artistic vision collector’s artists and curator’s intentions has been a challenge in the past but over time you develop systems and strategies and now feels like a nice ebb and flow. Art is a difficult pleasure on all fronts but it is a pleasure.

Please tell us about bG Gallery.
We specialize in finding important artists that are a melting point between two genres particularly genres that typically don’t mix in the art world like folk or outsider elements mixed with highly thought out installation. Our goal is to have highly meaningful art that is not be overly exclusionary. Our job is to open up unusual but engaging works to new audiences and markets.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Finding a match between the ethos of a collector and ethos of an artist is one type of success. Creating a memorable and impactful exhibit that engages viewers is another. Opening the up art forms that are overlooked or underrepresented to new audiences is big picture success.
