Meet Bevin Bru

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bevin Bru.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Bevin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born and raised in Miami, FL. My story is a pretty tangled one which could use a few diagrams to explain, but in short, I was raised by two incredible Cuban mothers who both immigrated to the US from Cuba when they were kids. My father is a first-generation Cuban/American. I had a very colorful upbringing, to say the least. There was a lot of deception during my most formative years and this planted the seed to seek absolute truth and certainty.

I’m not sure if “absolute truth” is what motivates an eight year old to hop on stage and perform a monologue or if it’s the plain high and excitement of the attention of 100s, either way, I performed for the first time when I was eight years old at the Actor’s Playhouse in Miami, Fl and I never looked back. That day I told myself I would move to NY the second I turn 18 and become an actor. All through middle school and high school, I was doing plays and musicals at The Miami Children’s Theatre. They were my family.

A week after I graduated from the Academy of Arts and Minds (which I think was shut down for money laundering – not sure – it’s FL – who knows) I moved to NYC. I attended AMDA for Musical Theatre and dropped out after two semesters.

I spent six years in NY performing in plays, short films, features and in national tours (I was Alvin in Alvin and The Chipmunks Live!). End of 2015, I booked a feature which shot in Ohio for a month and a tour which traveled for about two months. I gave up my sublet and decided I would live on the road for about five months saving all my money and just move to Los Angeles.

January 8, 2016 I arrived in LA with a more mature and determined head on my shoulders. Within the first year I booked several commercials, music videos, and by the second year I was cast alongside, a dear friend now, Ashliegh Morgan in Head Count (which is currently on Netflix). I’ve had the chance to be directed by an with an idol, Catherine Hardwicke, in Don’t Look Deeper and I met some incredible life-changing people, such as my agent Jacqueline Butcher (33 & West) and my manager David Rosario (Roar).

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
God No! And it shouldn’t be, that’s the fun of it. For me, the demons are internal. Things like fear, immaturity, self-sabotage – I’m my own worst enemy.

You get heartbroken in this business often. I have been promised roles only to find out they recast and began shooting without ever telling me. I’ve been on sets where it was just such a disaster I almost wanted to quit acting altogether. We all work for free in the beginning with student films, shorts, sizzles, etc.. You sometimes start to believe your craft and efforts really are worth a sandwich and Doritos!

It can get lonely and there’s so much uncertainty.  You’re surrounded by people, you become so close to these people, you expedite intimacy, and when the project ends you feel left alone.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
One night I was laying in bed and realized – I’m done waiting for permission to perform. I decided I wanted to interact with my friends and followers on IG and create something quick, fun, and simple. The next morning I asked my followers with the question box feature on IG to give me either – characters, direction, situations etc. and then I broke up a 1 minute monologue and gave a sentence or two to each character.  It was was so much fun.  Then I had a few friends ask me if I thought of this on my own or if it was some kind of “challenge”. I realized this could be something pretty cool and I created the IG page @asdirectedbyyou with the #asdirectedbyyou.

I’ve now had several creators do the challenge and some have created original raps as the characters given, others adapted musicals, card games, and TV shows. I’ve had casting directors repost our monologues. We’re growing because people nominate their friends and it’s so exciting!  I’m always around to answer any questions people have about the process or “how to”, just DM me.

I’m an actress, dancer, director, writer, oh yes, and a fitness instructor. Since I moved to L.A. I’ve been teaching HIIT classes at Circuit Works in Santa Monica.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
If you’re happy. That’s all that matters. No other real way to measure it.
