Today we’d like to introduce you to Georjeana Mesica.
Georjeana, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After graduating USC with a B.A in Communications and getting a post-graduate degree in Graphic Design at FIDM, I started in the fashion industry designing graphic t-shirts. While fashion has always been a driving force for me, I left the industry after 8 years designing for major denim and athleisure brands because I found it to be too predictable. I wanted a career with more life,
I wanted to be around different people, be inspired, design from the soul, get outside and not be such a slave to the computer/office life.
In truth, I wanted to immerse myself in the design world not just one aspect of it, so I began to embrace working on a bunch of different passion projects simultaneously.
From planning/designing events on the weekends to freelancing on multiple graphic design and branding projects, not to mention a full-time job, I found my best self when I was multi-tasking.
Most recently, I’ve brought all my many-faceted skills together and am launching a Fine Jewelry brand with my father whose been in the diamond business for 30 years. As Creative Director of L’Expression, we bring awareness and support to the freedom of expression through the pencil, a motif present in all our jewelry designs.
I design the collection and handle all branding, graphics, and marketing, so I’ve definitely got my hands full as usual.
“Success usually comes to those that are too busy to look for it” so fingers crossed!
Has it been a smooth road?
I’ve been lucky to get a chance to work in a variety of different fields with some incredible role models, but there are always struggles. Because I enjoy all aspects of design, I’ve had trouble over the years trying to choosing a field I could settle into. Accepting the idea that there may not be one path for myself and I could be great at many things, was when I truly found happiness.
What role has luck had in your life and career?
As a pretty superstitious person, luck is always something I’m nervous to talk about. I don’t want to jinx anything! But I think that luck is kind of like fate in that you usually end up where you are supposed to end up, even if things don’t make sense in that moment. Therefore, luck has played a role in my life in the sense that maybe I got where I needed to be sooner than fate could take me there. A few opportunities that I’ve come across have been very “lucky” and others more “unlucky”, but whose to say my actions didn’t bring that luck around.
That being said, finding the love of my life at 16 was pretty great luck.
Do you feel like there are certain traits that increase the likelihood of success?
I think confidence and optimism are huge. Doubting yourself and your goals is important to make you a better person, but it also can be the kiss of death. Doubt breeds insecurity which leads to a lack of action. I’ve learned over the years that me thinking “I’m the shit” is the only time where success is really possible.
What do you love about our city and what do you dislike?
I’m ride or die for LA. I was born in the valley, grew up in the city and went to school in Downtown so I really love a lot about this place and not just the weather. Driving through tree-lined backstreets in the valley with my windows down and that hot LA breeze blowing in, Downtown craft cocktail bars, Mexican food, the Hollywood Hills, my family — these all keep me here. I could live without everything closing at 10 pm, though, cmon LA we can do better!
