Today we’d like to introduce you to Betty Bema.
Thanks for sharing your story with us, Betty. So, ‘let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
Betty Bema officially started her career in entertainment in 2003 when she became a programming intern and later a radio personality, DJ Sunshyne, at KAZI 88.7 FM in Austin, TX. In the following years, she would obtain her Bachelor’s and MBA degrees with a concentration in business and communications. Simultaneously, she earned experience in a variety of roles at MTV, BET, Island Def Jam and Paramount Pictures. After years of experience in corporate America, Betty Bema would embark on her entrepreneurial vision to create a media conglomerate that produces original content with the goal to challenge conventional media and thought in unique ways. This would birth Pabulum Entertainment, which is a production hub for content, and later The MouthSoap TV, which consists of a series of digital shows focusing on the arts. She also manages talent, works production gigs and volunteers for several philanthropic causes in her spare time.
Has it been a smooth road?
Things have not always been smooth sailing for Betty Bema. Born in Third Ward Houston, Texas, Betty Bema would endure and witness the challenges of poverty. At the age of 15, she would experience one of the most traumatic events in her life when her father was hit and killed by a drunk driver while he was trying to change a tire for stranded drivers on the side of a freeway. The death of her father left her family in shambles, and for a while, they would live in a trailer house in a small rural town of Texas while they grieved. In order to cope, Betty Bema did what she knew her father would want for her, and she focused on her academics. Her hard work would pay off when she would graduate as a Bill and Melinda Gates Millennium Scholar with several scholarships under her belt and a ticket to The University of Texas at Austin. Throughout the years, she has strived to overcome adversity, discrimination in corporate America, and the glooming threat of poverty. In light of her latest entrepreneurial endeavors, the biggest challenges have been securing funding to continue content creation and increasing awareness.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and the least?
There are so many things I enjoy about Los Angeles and the Greater Los Angeles area. The weather, for one, is so enjoyable. How can you be mad with clear blue skies and subtle breeze? The other things I love about this city is the access to mountains, beaches, and the great touristy places like Hollywood Blvd. and Universal CityWalk. Also, the food fusion experience in LA is dope! The food scene is awesome period. From Al & Bea’s on the Eastside to Salsa & Beer in the Valley, to Palms Thai in Hollywood, all the way to Tito’s Tacos on the Westside. There’s tons of food to pick from. The least thing I like about the city is the traffic and pollution.
