Meet Bethany Dahl of Fetch Florals in Echo Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bethany Dahl.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Bethany. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I think I am still getting started. I have worked in design for ten years now but never thought of florals as something that would interest me. Through a friend, I was given an opportunity to assist a floral designer for a wedding. I’m used to working on a computer screen, so getting to work with my hands was immensely gratifying. Flowers have been a welcome respite from graphic design. Since that day, I’ve been slowly gaining clients and learning new techniques for floral arranging. It brings me so much joy.

Has it been a smooth road?
Starting a business is never smooth, and yet I am so grateful for it. I keep saying. “my business if growing me up.” Learning to be more assertive is a struggle for me as a person. I’m very accommodating and appeasing by nature. Knowing when to speak up or say no doesn’t come naturally. Especially to a client who is paying me. I also am learning the correct way to ask questions. Most brides have never put on a large event before and many don’t work in creative fields. Gleaning what someone wants creatively is always difficult, but especially so with someone not versed in the language of how to verbally communicate a visual idea.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Fetch Florals is a floral design business. Working predominately with brides, to create the floral aesthetic for a wedding. Florals significantly contribute to the vibe of an event. My personal aesthetic is 70’s boho, but as I mentioned before I am very accommodating. I’ll happily make a ball of roses for a bride if that’s what she wants. So much of Fetch Florals is making the client happy. I chose the word fetch both because it’s short for fetching and because I like the concept that I’ll go fetch that for you, happy to make your vision come to life. (Also the obvious “Mean Girls” reference doesn’t hurt), I’m proud to be making steps to be an environmentally friendly florist; avoiding floral foam, recycling flowers, or re-purposing them. There are many possibilities for reducing the waste in this industry.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think LA is a great place for any creative endeavor. There is so much inspiration in this city. And so many like-minded people. It’s easy to find support. I love the community that exists here. Also, the proximity to the LA Flower Mart makes it much more practical to get product and supplies.
