Meet Benita

Today we’d like to introduce you to Benita.

Hi Benita, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am an artist born and raised in Toronto, Canada. I have been singing since a young child but always hid my talents up until highschool where I started performing in school musicals and band performances. I later started doing local performances in my neighbourhood Jane and Finch and then started singing backup vocals for a few up and coming acts in the city. One of my most memorable background gigs was singing in Daniel Caesar’s choir for his five days sold our tour Freudian in Toronto. Shortly after, I started releasing my own music and my debut single, “Anything” reached the top 10 in CBC Canada’s Searchlight competition. This made me realize that I really do have a chance at making my dream come true of inspiring young listeners the same way my idols did for me growing up. I recently debuted my EP titled “SCARLET” which I’ve been working on for the past couple of years and have landed a couple of Spotify playlist covers for the first time ever. I am excited for the future and more listeners to discover my music. Thank you!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There were definitely some struggles, mostly with figuring out if I am making the right decisions or not. As a beginner in the industry, you meet many people who promise you things and sell you this dream and I’ve run into a lot of individuals where I couldn’t tell what their true intentions were. I’ve built more of a radar when it comes to individuals who genuinely believe in me. It has also been a challenge funding your own projects, something a lot of us artists have to figure out everyday but I took a lot of risks and made sacrifices because I knew it would be worth it in the end. I am super grateful for all of these lessons and trials, I’m sure there will always be more to learn as I go on this journey.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a singer/songwriter and recording artist that makes pop/rnb music. I am definitely most proud of the strength I’ve had overcoming challenges over the years to get me to this point of finally putting out a full body of work for people to really hear what I am about. I think what sets me apart is my story, everyone has their own story growing up and for me, I am an only child and I’ve felt independent my whole life with the support of my parents. I’ve always felt bad to ask for help throughout my whole life, leading me to always doing things on my own so when people show that they genuinely want to be a part of this thing, it means the world. I’m the type to grow with those around me and give back. Working so hard for things and then it finally paying off it really feels like a reward in the end.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favourite childhood memory would have to be performing with my friends in front of our elementary school. I don’t even think I knew that I wanted to be an artist yet but I knew I loved being up there dancing and singing for everyone.
