Meet Belinda Morris of Peoplescape Consulting Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Belinda Morris.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in South Africa during the inequality and strange ugliness of the Apartheid regime. Everything was apparently fine but it didn’t quite feel that way because underneath the surface so many awful things were happening. As an adult, I lived and worked across 3 other continents and finally settled in Los Angeles in 2013. Over the years, I took risks, took on challenges, said Yes! and then made it true. This background inspired our work as it laid the foundation for my commitment to cleaning up the murky waters in our workplaces – including issues like sexual harassment or bullying — and aligning employees’ behaviors with the company’s brand. Helping all people feel comfortable to bring their best selves to work is a passion of mine.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve learned valuable skills from every workplace, in every one of the eight global cities where I’ve lived. My challenge has always been battling the conflict between my curiosity and desire for change vs. a desire for career stability, and the long-term connections built by staying in one place. As Frost once said, “I chose the path less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.”

Peoplescape Consulting Group – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a boutique consulting firm, fully staffed by ex-HR leaders from across many different industries who have all served in-house, as business partners to C-suites, before joining Peoplescape. We are known as “The HR People for HR People.” If you need a great HR person fast, we are the go-to recruiters for this…because we are these people. We provide HR advisory services to small businesses and we make use of leading edge assessment tools to ensure the right people are in the right roles. Our message to busy business owner entrepreneurs is “we’ll cover the talent – you run the show!”|

We are particularly proud of the unique and timely work we’ve just launched on Workplace Sexual Harassment (The ‘Start With Me’ Program), where we are making a positive impact on workplace cultures with an innovative program which is fun, experiential and positive for all genders and levels. The workshop helps people understand themselves, others and the evolving, everyday dynamics. It equips participants with the tools they need to handle the subtle undertones as well as the everyday taxing and stressful situations in our workplaces more effortlessly. ‘Start With Me’ engages all people, at a very human level, using a non-blame approach, storytelling, and powerful awareness activities. It is designed to clean-up workplaces, to enhance the employee experience, nurture healthy, successful teams and create innovative environments. In the end, we need all of that to improve cultures and shareholder value. #StartWithMe #WorkplaceCulture #WorkplaceSexualHarassment #HighPerformance

At Peoplescape we have Grit! We’re quick, we figure it out and we never give up until it’s done and done with excellence.

What moment in your career do you look back on most fondly?
I feel blessed to be able to wade through so many fond memories, in answering this question. Yet, If I had to choose only one It would be early on, in my first executive role building an HR department from scratch. My boss was in his first role too, at the helm of an organization. We spent many a moment, learning from our own, and each other’s mistakes as we reshaped the structure, the culture, developing values and the employee experience before we even knew the terms for these things. I still feel extremely proud to watch this mentor of mine as he gallops from success to success in his career and I like to wonder what small part I might have played in any of it.

Childhood memory – What’s your favorite memory from childhood?
Not sure if it’s my favorite but it never ceases to make me laugh: I was helping backstage during the elementary school play, I sat down on a leather chair …but it moved…turned out it was my teacher in her leather jacket with buttons on the back like a leather couch has. Apologized, explained that I didn’t mean to sit on her, it was dark. Fortunately, she laughed and we moved on.
