Today we’d like to introduce you to Bayardo De Murguia.
Bayardo, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My name is Bayardo De Murguia. I am a first-generation Mexican American actor and voiceover artist who resides in Los Angeles. I come from a working-class family that moved to the US from Tijuana to pursuit the “American Dream”. My parents worked odd jobs here and there with the firm goal of providing for the family, making sure there was always something to eat, and that we had a good education. Even though both my mother and father were usually working away to provide, they each had a wonderful artistic side that would also inspire.
My mom would play the guitar and sing Rancheras while my dad would be reading and reciting works from Pablo Neruda, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and Gabriela Mistral. As a football player at the University of San Diego, I took their inspiration and fell in love with Drama. After graduating with a degree in Theatre, I moved to LA to pursue my dream. I recently signed on as a series regular on Netflix’s new original series “Tiny Pretty Things” to premiere in Fall 2020.
Has it been a smooth road?
The artistic road is never going to be a smooth one. You have to accept it and continue moving forward because it is the life that we chose. You see a lot of people come and go in LA. We live in such an amazing city, but it can also consume you if you don’t stay focused. I didn’t really come with a Plan B. There was no home to go back to if things didn’t work out. You have to dig deep and just keep going with a little patience. Finding things that ground you outside of your artistic work is also key. You have to keep a nice balance. Never lose your smile either 🙂
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
Answering this question is a little tricky. I’m proud of the hard work that I’ve put in and the new journey that it has brought me as an actor. It also inspires me to work even harder. I’ve never had expectations of something or thought that people deserved things. I think that’s how my immigrant upbringing has affected me. Anytime you think too highly of yourself, something will quickly bring you right back down. For me, it’s usually a “cachetada” or pinch from my mom ;).
What sets me apart?
We are all in this together, hustling away. Back of house crew in the restaurants, I’ve worked, bar teams I’ve had the honor of working next to countless weekends, Actor friends that continue putting out amazing work time after time. My success is their success and that’s why nothing really sets me apart from that. I love learning everyone’s story and appreciate their hard work. I take what I can from it and continue to see what can make me better from it.
Those chasing likes on social media, not working on their craft/goals but always talking about it, not aspiring to be better every day……that’s def not me. I guess that would set me apart from them :).
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
LA is the place to be. The city offers so much to you if you are willing to go out and find it. Do your best to go outside the bubble and you won’t regret it. Take a trip up the coast, spend time in the east side, downtown, Satna Monica, etc. The business itself is not fair and does take time. Just keep motivation and patience. It’s always nice to get away with a short trip around the city.
