Today we’d like to introduce you to Valerie Welebir.
Valerie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Bacabuche got its start with two close friends. Myself, a veteran of the business culture of fashion buying and my friend, a veteran of the artistic world of design. We sought to create a baby clothing line that shared our love for minimalist design, neutral color palettes, and natural and organic fabrics. As young mothers, we wanted to provide an easy dressing experience for parents by creating a capsule wardrobe designed to be versatile, cozy and durable.
Bacabuche (bah-kah-boo-chee) translates to ‘little rascal,’ a nickname given to me by my grandmother (a Bolivian native) when I was a child. With this memory in mind, a playful spirit is at the heart of everything the company does. We are manufactured in Los Angeles and our special knits are made in Peru. This focus on useful but aesthetic clothes for babies and children has led to Bacabuche’s success and the brand can now be found online and in cities across the country and around the world.
Has it been a smooth road?
Bacabuche, like most small companies, was started from scratch. We have had our fair share of bumps in the road. With time, however, we have been able to learn how to navigate obstacles more quickly. Sometimes that means pivoting from an original idea.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Bacabuche’s modern aesthetic and iconic colors create the basis of our brand. Influenced by our personal experiences as caregivers, we create minimalist essentials with parent and child in mind, designed for easy dressing and comfort. We make sure to keep tightly curated color palettes and silhouette’s so they easily coordinate together.
An important piece of our brand is the ethical and sustainable practices we focus on in our production. We make sure we partner with factories that maintain a high standard, both in the USA and abroad.
While many companies are doing one or several of these concepts right, what sets Bacabuche apart and what we are most proud of is that we have and will continue to make the sacrifices to do them all right.
How do you, personally, define success? What’s your criteria, the markers you’re looking out for, etc?
Success means so many things to me, including doing something I love, having freedom in business and in life, maintaining work-life balance, and being present for my kids every day. These are all pieces that are key to making me successful.
