Today we’d like to introduce you to Autumn Palen.
Autumn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My start in both film and the city of LA came with USC, where I studied Film & TV Production among an immensely inspiring collection of students and staff. While there, I produced and co-produced short films, interned at large companies where I needed badges and key fobs, forged friendships that last to this day, all that wonderful jazz.
After graduating, I taught English abroad for a year in Paris, where I also interned for a film festival. I connected with creatives in the City of Lights through the 48 Hour Film Festival and the glory and power of Facebook, finding avenues to create my own side-projects and support others with theirs between tutoring children and teens.
Following Paris, I carried out an artistic residency at De Liceiras 18, living in a slim old house in the center of Porto with a handful of artists and exhibiting our works at the end of the month.
Since my return to the states, I have produced two short films, one narrative non-fiction entitled Worst Case Scenario, and one absurdist heist-comedy, Eating Lisa.
I’m now a freelance cinematographer and writer, flailing around the city on a hope and a prayer.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to success in Los Angeles is paved with… no, actually, it’s not paved. It’s a spider web of dirt lines. Following any one way can lead you back to where you were, or further backwards, or completely off-track. I wouldn’t say I (or a majority of people) are where they would like to be along said path, but it’s all a matter of finding your footing amongst it all, not getting too tripped up, and having friends who are also out there getting dirt on their boots.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I’d take more time to appreciate the highs, take deep breaths through the lows, and not feel the pressure to do everything all at once.
