Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Kane Anderson.
Austin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Based in Los Angeles, I come by way of Ohio. My first experiments with making short films were actually in middle school. Although the camera would be set aside for many years, as I played college football then graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
I went on to complete a film program in Las Vegas, where my first short film was selected to festivals in cities including Sydney, Australia, and Los Angeles, CA. After film school, I moved to L.A., where I’ve been for less than two years. I have since written and directed my first feature film, Through the Blinds, and I am currently working on a network television pilot.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Moving across the country, pursuing writing, or making a feature film, is full of risks and obstacles. It was important to find the intrinsic value from the start because there are certainly moments that will test your desire. It’s a constant challenge and an ongoing process. I am just getting started, so I am sure something else unpredictable awaits.
One morning during our shoot for Through the Blinds, I got a call from our producer, Jordan Tyner, who told me the highways were closed because they were literally on fire. It turned out to be one of the worst wildfires L.A. had in years. Everything was delayed for hours. It was something that you just can not plan for. We were constantly facing different types of adversity and having to find ways to continue moving forward.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
Within all of the projects, I have written, and directed are stories that depict elements of the human experience. Stories that shift in tone and aesthetic to match the intricacies of the personalities or experiences they embody. I strive to create projects with conceptual layers, although I make it a point to bury any thematic or moral construct deep within a story, leaving it to be interpreted by the audience.
My latest film, Through the Blinds, which stars Emily Shenaut and Christopher Ellay, was developed with the idea of exploring the two sides of a couple within an atmosphere of building tension. The film observes a young lawyer who takes extreme measures as he vies for a promotion, while his fiancée’s life begins to unravel after she meets someone new. As the story unfolds the characters begin to question their judgment about who they are committed to and who they can trust.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Along with preparing the script that will become my second feature film, I am really looking forward to premiering Through the Blinds at a film festival. Our entire cast and crew worked incredibly hard to make the film a reality, so to have the opportunity to screen the film with a festival audience will be special.
