Meet Audrey of True Moxie Image

Today we’d like to introduce you to Audrey.

Audrey, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Hey! I’m a free spirit & free lance photographer, based in LA since 2005. I’ve worked behind the camera and in front as a professional actor and model for over a decade. Which do I love more?…. I could not love one with out the other. I’d say the joy of my artistic journey certainly makes time fly!

I was raised in Mexico and at 7 years old, my dad gave me a little point and shoot camera (you know the horizontal kind from the early 90’s) and a roll of 12 exposures of film. I was in love. My siblings became my muses until I began taking Sr. photos of friends in high school. In college I became the official head shot photographer for the theater department (at Seattle Pacific University). I switched to a digital camera as soon as I arrived to LA and haven’t looked back since, except to reminisce the feeling of loading film and having it developed. Shout out to anyone who can relate Lol! I am grateful to have incredible photo mentors (My Dad, Mike Henry, Manuello Paganelli & Dan Warner) who have helped me develop an eye for life-into-photos over the years.

True Moxie Image was an idea born in a garage studio space during a particularly transitional time in my personal life; the vision being to create images for artists that make things happen for them, helping them arrive to their ‘next level’, whether personally or professionally. Building on the premise of authenticity (truth), courage (moxie) and vision (image), began to create great results. In essence, establishing this concept and founding the company has helped me to take brave steps in arriving to the next levels of my own artistic career. Team work makes the dream work right?

The *concept for “Bio-Editorials” originated as I saw a huge need in the acting community for something more than a head shot to help present an image, whether on paper or online. A visual tool that helps actors/musicians be seen by casting and the public eye, as they could be; Magazine cover ready. Capitalizing on the image & voice they want to express that is true to them, not just a procured version of what the status quo of Hollywood demands.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Ha! One word. Freelance.

Anytime we choose to employ ourselves in building our own business rather than working to build someone else’s dream-castle, we are on our own much of the way and challenges ensue. Staying adaptable to the times, the demands of marketing on social media and simply staying on top of follow-up with current or potential clients can be challenging. Navigating fierce competition in a city filled with photographers can be daunting. Keeping up with what the industry requires or deems popular in the realm of photography can feel overwhelming. Gotta stay focused, true to you, and ready when opportunity knocks.

During my shoots, I focus on creating a stress free environment that is uplifting, often by diffusing essential oils and playing my client’s favorite music. Many times I find myself speaking (in English, Spanish or sometimes Spanglish, depending on the person) to the core of human desires, needs and hopes – reminding my clients that they are worth their own investment in themselves. Sometimes I get the chance to offer insight into what the best next step might be in reaching their goals. Kind of like a personal cheerleader or life coach. My hope is that when they see their photos they’d feel empowered and hear a familiar voice saying, “You got this!”

I count myself among the very few female photographers in LA who have put in substantial time in front and behind the camera (this makes such a difference, relating to my clients and helping them feel safe to be themselves). Rarer still, one who will not compromise your face with retouching or cause you to feel less than you are in the face of Hollywood. I get a lot of “Audrey, help! I just spent so much money on a shoot that I’m unhappy with, non of the photos feel like ME, I can’t send these out.” Sad but true. With me and my team, my clients are seen, heard and valued as they are. They get authentic shots they can be proud of. Nothing thrills me more than hearing about the doors our photos have opened, creating next level opportunities all around!

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I always have big plans for what’s next ☺. Presently, I’m building onto more platforms, including production in film/TV/documentaries. However, photography/branding will always be the foundation for True Moxie Image. Serving and exhorting artists in the greater LA area is one of my greatest honors and joys!
