Meet Atara Glazer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Atara Glazer.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It all began over ten years ago with a Craigslist add looking for a singer. I showed up to an audition, took one look at Jack (my co-partner in crime) and the rest is history as they say. We started Plastic Rhino in 2013, and now we will be releasing our final album this Summer. I mean, if you want me to go even farther back, then I’ll start with when I was two years old dancing and singing every music video playing on MTV. I always say MTV raised me. I am a child of pop music culture. If MTV wasn’t on, then my parents were taking me to a concert, playing a live video of a concert, or introducing me to the newest band. My father was the prog rock master, showing me Pink Floyd, Genesis, King Crimson, Porcupine Tree, my mother loved the harder stuff and brought grunge and heavier bands like NIN, Alice In Chains, and Soundgarden into my life in the 90s. So my music taste was very versatile and all over the place. Plastic Rhino’s first real EP was fun and bouncy and More like the girl-fronted bands of rock. Our 2nd album was heavier and harder with more guts. This new album takes us one more level up to the nu metal alternative bands of today. We wanted to give it everything we got and finish our catalog with a bang. We can’t wait to share it with the world!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road for us has been many dead ends and having to turn back around and start over. I don’t think the music industry is designed to be a smooth road though. It weeds out the weak so to speak. Only those with the insane passion continue on.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I started singing since I can remember, but I started taking it seriously when I was 12. I asked my Mother for voice lessons. I wanted to learn how to sing properly. I joined every choir group I could and auditioned for every drama production. I studied music in college. I was being groomed to be an Opera singer. As fun as it is to sing Opera, it wasn’t the path I was looking for. I wanted to be like the stars I saw on MTV. So I joined local bands as a frontwoman and enjoyed writing my own music so much more. I think a lot of people don’t quite understand how hard it is to write a decent song. I had to listen to a lot of pop to understand radio-friendly song structures and the chords that resonate with nonmusical ears. I fell in love with songwriting, I was very bad at first, but over the years, learned what it takes to create a complete song. In 2015, we released our last album to some minor successes. We were climbing the ladder so to speak, but my day job as a Costumer in film and TV was also growing. I found myself succeeding more in the film and television industry. The band got moved to the sidelines. I still performed when I could, singing for Ultimate Jam Night at The Whisky A Go Go every Tuesday, singing in the studio for producers, and writing music and singing for others. It took a pandemic to give me the space and fire to once again want to write and create new songs for Plastic Rhino, and boy did I have a lot to say. We all went through big changes, metamorphic changes. With that came a new growth for myself as a singer/songwriter. I finally found who I wanted to be as a musician. I’m so excited for these nine songs we will be releasing on the world soon!

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I love surprising people with my ability to scream on songs. I added a lot more of it to these new songs, and I can’t wait to see everyone’s reactions to it!
