Meet Asya Shein of Fusicology in Silver Lake

Today we’d like to introduce you to Asya Shein.

Asya, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Working in the music business since the age of 15, my mother is a talented violinist, guitarist and singer, and father, a retired and accomplished designer and mechanical engineer; Soviet immigrants who came to North America in the late 70s.

As a Toronto raised, Los Angeles-based new media, technology, and music marketing entrepreneur, I thrive on introducing new sounds, events, and talent connecting the Global Soul Community, heightening public awareness of critically acclaimed music artists.

Having traveled within the US and Europe extensively at a young age, it exposed me to a global realm and appreciation of quality music. As a teenager and dancer in the mid ’90s, I frequented the urban nightclub scenes in Toronto, Detroit, Chicago, and New York to get a feel for the industry, and quickly acclimated to the deep house scene, falling in love with this unique sound and community.

I attended Wayne State in Detroit while assisting the late, great Laura Gavoor at her Yin-Sight Management firm which represented the founders of Techno & legendary house DJs. Relocating to Chicago in 1998 for an opportunity to work at Undaground Therapy Music and later a stint at Dust Traxx Recordings.

In 2000, moving to LA, I launched my booking & PR agency Mir Media which represented Questlove, Jazzy Jeff, Pete Rock, Ali Shaheed, Dwele, Bilal, 9th Wonder, Ron Trent, Osunlade, Kerri Chandler, the late great J Dilla + others.

Fusicology was incepted in 2003, along with the nationwide marketing platform, aggregating, listing and marketing event listings in 20 cities in North America along with exclusive content + music via our website & apps. Clients include event producers, venues, festivals, conferences, record labels, ad agencies, artists, brands, non-profits & media companies.

With Fusicology, and soon my new startup FuseLife, I am fortunate enough to be able to continue to establish my life’s mission: to advocate progressive social change and community building through conscious quality music, entertainment, and technology mediums.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Personally, I have endured many struggles which I believe gave me the grit and fortitude to take on the challenges with my business. My journey has been filled with profound life lessons – transcending through as a female entrepreneur in the sometimes challenging music business. I would also say my challenges are just like everyone else’s which I believe all can relate to within the at-times fickle entertainment space. Aside from those challenges, I have made great friends and have had awesome mentors who have allowed me to endure in the industry and as a human being.

Fusicology – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The Fusicology Team are seasoned event producers and website & app publishers focused on lifestyle marketing, social media, partnerships & sponsorships. We specialize in brand, artist and business development.

We have had the honor to put on events with Stevie Wonder, Common, co-produce Prince & Miles Davis tributes and various events for the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.

Outside of technology and content, we work on experiential campaigns and have vast experience in production, project management & branding and over two decades of working with musical talent and agencies.

What we are most proud of as a company, as well as what has set up apart, is that we have stuck to our values and have kept true to our passion for conscious soul music, never wavering and keeping the brand intact as a leading platform and source to the communities we serve.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is subjective but the values that I live by in order to obtain and maintain success is by being a good person, treating people with respect and in return I get the validation from the completion from my work. Achieving balance in life and having all that one needs in an abundant way is key – it is not only, of course, important to be financially well-off but it is also imperative to be truly happy. Work hard, play harder and being well off spiritually, emotionally, mentally, physically and then financial freedom and ultimate success will be inevitable.
