Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Spivey
Hi Ashley, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hello! I’m Ashley, the creator of Ashesthetics. My journey as an esthetician began during my early career, where I thrived on building meaningful relationships with clients and truly understanding their needs. After five years in retail, I felt a need to serve others in a more impactful way.
One day, while exploring cosmetology schools with my best friend, I came across the esthetics program and was immediately drawn to it. My personal experiences with eczema and acne-prone skin made me realize how relatable this field was for me. It felt like the perfect path to pursue.
Without hesitation, I made the decision to save up, leave my part-time job, and enroll in esthetician school. To support myself, I worked during the holiday season. I applied for financial aid and was blessed to take my financial aid money to set up a facial space out of my home and that has been the place i started and grew my business from. I enrolled and quickly fell in love with the art of esthetics, and the science of the skin. I prayed for guidance, strength, and dedication to follow this dream, and I truly believe I was led on this journey. Now, three years later as licensed esthetician , I continue to learn and grow alongside my business, and I’m excited for what the future holds.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey I embarked on in esthetics school was filled with hurdles and learning experiences. I narrowly missed passing my second semester by just 1%. It wasn’t due to a lack of passion or ability; rather, I struggled with discipline, which ultimately cost me that term. However, this setback fueled my determination to return. The following fall, I re-enrolled and successfully completed my esthetics program, earning a spot on the Dean’s Honor Roll and my first financial reward for my academic achievements.
Starting esthetics school in 2019, I faced another major challenge when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, transforming my education into a hybrid model for my second attempt. Despite the changes, I adapted and thrived, achieving even greater success than before.
As I progressed, I took steps to legalize my business, applying for my esthetician insurance and investing in backbar products. After a fruitful year, I realized my home-based business was expanding rapidly, and I needed additional permits and funding to continue operating effectively. I sought a position at a beauty store that specialized in HydraFacial and waxing, but soon found myself juggling both jobs. Managing my esthetics business while working part-time became a balancing act as I pursued permits and prepared for a move into a dedicated suite.
This year, I encountered the toughest obstacle of my life: the loss of my older brother. He was one of my greatest supporters and his battle with brain cancer not only affected him but also took a toll on my mental well-being and my business. As a result, I step back and take a month off from both my job and my entrepreneurial endeavors.
Recently, I received the exciting news that I secured my first suite in Gardena, CA, which I will start working in November 2024. This new opportunity allows me to juggle my job while nurturing my business until I’m ready to fully transition to working independently.

What are your plans for the future?
I am committed to furthering my education and honing my craft in the esthetics field through ongoing learning. This includes obtaining many different skill certifications and diligently practicing to refine the techniques I acquire. By continually seeking out opportunities for growth and improvement, I aim to perfect the skills I’ve learned and stay updated with the latest trends and advancements in esthetics. This dedication to education will not only enhance my expertise but also enable me to provide the best possible care for my clients.
I also I envision expanding my business to include a complete facial beauty bar and opening an esthetics school, aimed at empowering young women, like myself, with dreams of a career in esthetics. This school will not only provide training and education on how to thrive in the industry, run and manage their business but also offer job opportunities within my salon for those interested. Additionally, I aspire to organize facial events within the black and brown communities, focusing on raising awareness about skincare. Through these initiatives, I hope to cancel out common misconceptions about people of color skin and skin health and emphasize the importance of consistency and intention in skincare routines, all while giving back to the Inglewood and LA community
