Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Rowe and Hilary Bryant.
Hilary was a recent divorcee when she and Ashley struck up a friendship in acting class.
Ashley who has been dating in Los Angeles for many years would often regale Hilary with terrible yet hilarious stories about what was awaiting her in her newfound singledom.
One day while walking her dog, Maizy, Hilary was struck with the idea to create a story that reflected something she hadn’t seen before: a 20 something divorcee trying to figure out the parts of her life that everyone else seemed to have experienced while single. She emailed Ashley her idea and the rest as they say, is history.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been smooth in that we work really well together. We balance each other out. Hilary is the big idea driven deadline one, and Ashley is the color-coded, organized, “maybe let’s do it tomorrow” type.
We bring out the best in each other and creating this series has been so easy in terms of creative flow. The biggest struggle is that everyone in Los Angeles is creating a web series. Right. Now. How can we go about getting the funding we need while also respecting our values, like paying people for their work?
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Aftering – what should we know?
Aftering is an upcoming web series about a millennial woman, Dawn, who is recently divorced. She’s happy about that, but she’s not happy with not knowing whats next. She’s spent her entire adult life in a relationship, and now that plan is demolished. Enter Astrid.
Astrid is a divorce fairy who has been sent to guide Dawn through this new chapter in her life. Armed with lollipops, vibrators, cheesepuffs, and very strong opinions, she moves in to show Dawn theres more to life than she once thought.
In short: the show is about falling in love with yourself. It’s like Broad City meets Mary Poppins.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
We try to play to our strengths and we’re great at communicating with each other. It’s a real collaboration between us and we try to stick by what we value and not compromise that with ourselves or others.
