Meet Ashley Merrill of Lunya in Santa Monica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Merrill.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As someone wearing my husband’s shabby old clothes in an effort to be comfortable I could relate personally to the problem and I had a strong vision for in solving it. This realization sent me on a mission to find comfortable, flattering sleepwear but my only choices were uncomfortable, sexy lingerie or frumpy, traditional PJ’s.

This experience sent me on a mission to create something better. Something that wasn’t lingerie or the “I Love Lucy” era piped Pajama set, but something that truly embraced today’s modern woman. Lunya is about helping women feel their best, look amazing, be comfortable – simply put – effortless. Today’s woman has enough on her plate, we’re here to quietly help her have a better night so she can have a better day.

I also believe that sleepwear should perform for you – be super comfortable, feature considered design, be easy to care for and make you look amazing.

Lunya is setting the new sleepwear standard by reinventing the category on everything from styles and fabrics to construction. We are starting with the woman’s needs and working backwards, there is no other company that takes this kind of responsive approach in sleepwear and this enables us to create pieces that uniquely serve our woman. We focus on the often neglected details like; waistbands that don’t ride up, straps that don’t twist, seams that don’t rub, performance fabrics, etc.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No one knows what they are doing. Prior to starting Lunya I idolized successful entrepreneurs as people with some kind of innate knowledge about how to run a business. As Lunya has grown I’ve had the opportunity to have conversations with these people and have learned that no one starts out knowing how to run a business. It’s something you approach with a dose of logic, a spritz of optimism and a hell of a lot of passion.

I have stories about failures in production, leadership, marketing, customer relations, etc. Rather than getting specific I would say my most important lesson is fail fast and as small as possible and pick yourself up and try again.

Lunya – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We make sleepwear for the modern woman. As women designing for women we make her feel like her best self in her off hours. We do this through impeccable design, craftsmanship and materials.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Inbound thank you emails rock my world. People send us emails thanking us for the products and the transformational effect they’ve had on their self-esteem and comfort around the house. We send them around the whole office and it really gives the whole team warm fuzzies.
