Meet Ashley McDonald of Everything But Sun in Burbank

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley McDonald.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started working for my friend Sarah at Blush spray tan. We are both hairstylists together and she needed help at her shop so I got certified to do tans. I worked there for a few years and eventually Blush close down. After working there, I started doing Tans mobiley.

Sarah had set me up to go to a couple of the local weather girls houses once a week to tan and blow dry them. From there everything started to fall into place and with referrals coming in I knew I needed to open a location. I found the location for Everything But Sun here in Burbank and fell in love with it.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Every new business has struggles when they first open. Nothing ever goes perfectly smooth. Our struggle was getting our name out there and letting people know we were open. Burbank is such a small community and they already had spray tanning salons open before we came around. We wanted to let people know we may have been a new storefront but we have been doing this for years.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Everything But Sun – what should we know?
Here at Everything But Sun Spray Tans we specialize in custom airbrush tans that we personally spray on. Sydney and I both pride ourselves on our attention to detail and our custom blending of colors for our client specific needs. We have multiple ventilation systems and our clients never leave feeling wet or sticky or feeling like they have been breathing in tanning chemicals like most other tanning places. Our clients call us back all the time saying I was in this week and I can’t believe how natural my tan looks, I love it. We try to go above and beyond to make our client clients feel comfortable and at home, as we know some people are nervous or feel awkward being sprayed by a stranger for the first time.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
We believe our biggest supporters are our families and friends. Without them, Everything But Sun would not be possible. They have helped us in so many ways. Both Sydney and myself are Burbank born and raised. We have grown up going to school here, through sports programs, and even coaching sports teams here. We have a huge support from our community. We also believe that a big part of our success is that we give back. We are both members of a charity called Live 2 Give Children’s Charity, a 100% nonprofit charity who helps children and their families who are battling cancer. We want to be there and help people who are in a less fortunate situation than we are.
