Meet Ashley Leahy and Brooke Golding of Candid Home in Silverlake

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Leahy and Brooke Golding.

Ashley and Brooke, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We worked together at another design firm prior to opening Candid Home. We both shared similar aesthetic and work mindsets so decided to do this for ourselves instead!

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been smoother than expected! We had so much support from family + friends during the opening, and after that have had such an amazing welcome from customers. All of that love eased a lot of what might have felt like “struggle”. There were some now-funny issues like during rainy season when the building sprung so many leaks, and one chair in particular being rained on wherever we happened to move it in the shop. We had to close a few days and regroup… Neither of us takes life too seriously, so we laughed through it.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Candid Home – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
We’re known for being colorful + bold, with a warm vintage feel to the store. Piece-wise we carry a lot of Murano Glass, Burlwood, Chrome and really colorful fun items like vintage op-art puzzles and collage art.

We don’t try to stay local with our experience, so have items both vintage + new from all over the world… What sets us apart is approachability and a sense of fun while still being just a great furniture store. We have pizza puzzles and a Cats + Plants book (that’s exactly what it sounds like) but they’ll be sitting on a 70’s chrome dining table for example. People come into the shop and excitedly yell “Oh my god!” so often, which is the best feeling for us.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
We both are East Coast transplants, so we love the weather of course and the sense of just enjoying life people have out here instead of “work work work”. Sometimes that’s the same thing we dislike when we’re trying to meet a design deadline but overall we love it here!
