Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Kravitz.
Ashley, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
During college, I worked as a Page for the studios and made some nice contacts. When I graduated college, I got a job working for a writer who had a development deal at Disney. After working for him for a year and a half, he told me that his deal was ending. I sent my resume out blindly and received a call from the clearance department at Dick Clark Productions. I worked at Dick Clark for 2 years working on the numerous award shows and Blooper specials he produced.
After finding out about a clearance job at Disney, I applied and received an offer in the Corporate legal dept. handling clearances for the theme parks and other entities. I worked in that capacity for 2 years and found a job in the theatrical department at Disney, where I stayed for a few years until I had my second child. Once my son was born, I started to work on a few projects and built up my company over the past 17 years.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When I first started my company, I thought of myself as a full-time mother and tried to work between my two kids’ schedules. Once the workload got to be a bit more and my husband got laid off, I realized that this was something to pursue more in full time. My husband joined the company and was also available to help with the child rearing which was a huge help. Working from home allowed me to always have an open-door policy with my kids and made myself available to them whenever they needed. I was lucky enough to schedule my time, but it also meant working very late hours while the kids were sleeping. I don’t feel that I missed out at all and I think that my children are grateful that they had both parents home and available to them. They are now both in college and my husband and I are still working together full time, while also employing others to help.
Please tell us about Cleared by Ashley.
I provide a niche service to the entertainment industry. I clear third party (intellectual property) for the television and motion picture industry. While most studios do have a clearance department in-house, I mainly work for the mini-majors and independent producers.
I am lucky enough to have worked on some wonderful projects over the years including House of Cards, Lala Land, the Twilight Series movies and Handmaid’s Tale to name a few.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Absolutely nothing! I could not have planned this business out and expected to have such success. I feel very fortunate and lucky!
