Meet Ashita and Gobind Kripalani of Eyebrows Inc in West Covina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashita and Gobind Kripalani.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Ashita and Gobind. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was actually going to school for something else and ended up learning how to do eyebrows just for the heck of it. Once I got into it, I knew I was hooked. I found the whole process of threading eyebrows so interesting because it can literally change how a person looks. So I started working at a salon under someone else and did that for over three years, but I had always told my employer that my dream was to own my business one day and I would like to get there before I’m 30. Three years at that salon was a great learning experience and I was like a sponge. I took in everything from learning how to do different kinds of brows to running a salon. After three years, I decided it was time to do my own thing. So with the help of my family, especially my dad (Gobind), we started a salon in West Covina. The first six months were extremely challenging. I had to start from scratch and build the whole clientele from zero. I had brought over zero clients from the last place I worked at because I didn’t want to take away their clients and cut into their business. They had been nothing but amazing to me so I wanted them to keep their clients. We started with doing just 3-4 clients a week which was nothing and didn’t pay the bills. But we had faith and we stuck through.

Word started getting out, Yelp reviews started to come in, people started bringing their family and friends and in about a year, we had developed a fairly regularly clientele. Once I hired my employees, then business only grew from there because I made sure to hire the right people. And we have come so far because people have been loyal clients, we have great employees, and we always make sure that the client leaves happy. Our motto is that it’s not about what we want, it’s about what the client wants.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. No business ever is. The first three days of our opening, we got only one client. And that was also a family friend. It was very disheartening at times but you have faith in your talents and you hang in there. People are very picky when it comes to beauty. So it took us some time to get people in and once they came, we made sure they left happy so they would come back. We had to advertise a lot which we hadn’t realized before we opened the business. I will never take advertising for granted again. I thought that word of mouth will bring people in, but in this day and age, that doesn’t work as much. The first six months, we didn’t even make enough to pay rent or the bills, so we were burning through our savings real quick. But we hung in there because we knew we did great eyebrows. People started coming regularly and reviewing us, and our online presence helped us grow our clientele.

Please tell us about Eyebrows Inc.
We thread eyebrows and we specialize in eyebrows as well. We can help clients with anything from cleaning to reshaping their eyebrows to helping them figure out what makeup looks good their eyebrows. If it’s anything related to making eyebrows look great, we do it!

We are really proud of the work we do because we truly are a team of passionate threaders.

We don’t just do eyebrows for the sake of doing them. We make sure that what we do looks good on the person’s face and goes with their face shape and eye shape.

What sets us apart is our dedication to do good work and not worry about the background noise. We are not one of those salons that will badmouth someone else’s work. We will let our work speak for itself. Competitors have often given us fake reviews but we have always just focused on the work we do. We don’t just treat our clients as clients, we truly treat them like family. We are also very honest with our clients. If we ever feel like we can’t deliver on something, we tell them that too. We are not in it just for the money. We are all in it because we have a passion for eyebrows.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would have definitely focused a lot more on advertising and marketing before I started the salon. I honestly thought that word of mouth alone would do it but it doesn’t. There’s so many options now that people don’t need to come to you.

You need to advertise and get your name out there and make them come to you. And once they come, you only have one chance to do a great job because you want to make sure they come back. If you leave a bad first impression, chances are they won’t come back. But yeah, advertising, advertising, advertising!
