Meet Jenny Danielsson of The Artword Podcast

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Danielsson.

Jenny, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
The first episode of The Artword Podcast was published in the summer of 2018. An avid radio fan, this was more than anything a secret dream come true. Here I was, the hostess and founder of a podcast in English. How marvelous!

I studied art history, cultural studies and philosophy, at Stockholm University and with the London Consortium, Birkbeck College. Later, I landed a job working in a gallery in Stockholm, closely with the owner Angelika Knäpper. Forever generous and suppurative, she taught me the ropes and I became familiar with all aspect of the business. Most importantly, I got to know the artists.

Five years in, the gallery took a turn and I decided it was time for me to walk down another path. Having no clear vision of what this new phase would entail, I went to hike the John Muir Trail in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. After 19 days sleeping in a tent and 211 miles of walking, I was ready for a new chapter.

When an editor asked if I would contribute an interview with an artist to a publication, I accepted the offer. That assignment became the start of my current journalistic journey, which includes writing about contemporary art in Swedish for a couple of magazines.

In 2015, I initiated a podcast about contemporary art in Swedish, in collaboration with co-host Oscar Carlson. In the talk show Danielson & Carlson we reviewed current art affairs and examined topics such as art criticism and the artists’ studio with invited guests. A great adventure, which is due to a lack of funds currently on pause.

One of my best friends lives in Los Angeles. I came to visit him for the first time ten years ago. I found a brilliant city that I didn’t quite understand. But I liked it and kept coming back. Primarily because I had discovered an art scene, I was fascinated by and wanted to know more about.

The art scene in Los Angeles is grand and truly diverse. Aside a number of art institutions there are brilliant commercial galleries, a myriad of artist run spaces and the community amongst artists is great. It’s wonderful to have the opportunity to explore it all.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Is anything ever smooth sailing? I show up for work and try my best.

We live in a hive of information and it is hard to get your message across. Luckily it matters every time someone subscribes to the podcast on any of the platforms. Subscribers result in better ranking, which means more people get to know about The Artword.

I get to talk to amazing people. Of course, I wish for as many as possible to get the opportunity to listen in to what they say.

The Artword Podcast – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from others?
The Artword Podcast is a series of conversations with artists, curators and other inspiring individuals around the art world. Available on all major podcast platforms. The aim for each episode is to offer an in-depth talk around a specific topic. Subject matter range from Wellness to Film, from Disaster to Money.

The creators are founder and hostess Jenny Danielsson and audio engineer Eric Person. The music is generously provided by Rasmus Thord. The graphic profile is created by Calle Ljungström.

In comparison to other podcasts on art the programs are short, on average 15-20 min. But nothing is set in stone. Sound engineer Eric Person loved a winding conversation about Dapper Day with Justin Jorgensen so much it was published in full length.

Always on the lookout for exciting collaborations, the hope for The Artword is to evolve and grow in mysterious ways.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Every time someone listens to the podcast and get something out of it, I am happy.
