Today we’d like to introduce you to Artemis Baltoyanni.
Hi Artemis, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I completed my Master’s in Art Business at New York University while working for the artist Elizabeth Peyton, an experience that offered an inside look at the creative and professional pulse of the New York art world. From there, I worked for an art advisor in New York and later at Venus Over Manhattan gallery, gaining a 360-degree perspective on the art world—from creation to curation to collection.
In 2016, I founded my art advisory with the goal of making the art world accessible, exciting, and rewarding for my clients. I work with both new and experienced collectors, helping them discover artists, navigate galleries and fairs, and acquire works that are not only meaningful to them but also thoughtful investments. Education is a big part of my process — I love guiding clients through exhibitions, introducing them to artists, and helping them build collections that reflect their taste and vision.
In 2019, I expanded my work to Greece with The Intermission, a contemporary exhibition space in Piraeus that collaborates with international galleries. Since then, I’ve curated projects ranging from the first Jean-Michel Basquiat exhibition in Greece to artist residencies and site-specific commissions. Today, I divide my time between Athens and Los Angeles, advising collectors and developing cultural projects that bridge local and global contexts.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like most careers in the art world, it hasn’t been a straight line. The market is constantly shifting, and as an advisor you have to stay ahead of trends while also guiding clients toward works that will stand the test of time. In the early years, one of the biggest challenges was building trust — this is a relationship-based business, and people need to feel confident not only in your expertise but also in your taste and integrity.
Another ongoing challenge is educating new collectors in an industry that can feel opaque or intimidating. I’ve always believed in demystifying the process — whether that means explaining how an art fair works, introducing clients to artists in their studios, or breaking down why one work is priced differently from another. That transparency is what turns a first-time client into a long-term one.
Running The Intermission during the pandemic was another test — with travel restrictions and uncertainty, we had to find creative ways to keep projects alive and audiences engaged. But those challenges ultimately strengthened my network and expanded the ways I work with clients and artists, both locally and internationally.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Artemis Contemporary Inc. is my art advisory, which I founded in 2016 to guide collectors through the often opaque and intimidating art world. I work with clients at every stage — from people just beginning their collecting journey to seasoned collectors looking to refine or expand their holdings.
What I do is highly personalized. I help clients discover artists and works that resonate with them, navigate galleries, art fairs, and auctions, and make acquisitions that are both meaningful and strategically sound. I’m deeply involved in the process — from arranging private viewings to introducing clients to artists in their studios, to advising on conservation, framing, and installation. Education is a big part of my work; I want my clients to feel confident, informed, and excited about the art they live with.
I travel extensively throughout the year to attend international art fairs, exhibitions, and studio visits, ensuring my clients have access to the most relevant and exciting opportunities worldwide. I also specialize in building thematic collections — thoughtfully curated around a client’s personal interests, historical periods, or conceptual frameworks — so that each collection tells a cohesive and compelling story.
What sets me apart is my ability to connect local and global contexts. I’m equally comfortable securing works by internationally celebrated artists as I am introducing clients to important new voices in contemporary art.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve built — with clients, artists, and galleries alike. My business is rooted in trust, taste, and transparency. I want VoyageLA readers to know that my role is not just about transactions — it’s about building a collection that tells their story, reflects their vision, and stands the test of time.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Goldsmiths University was a formative experience for me — what I learned there forever changed the way I view the world. Later, at NYU, my professor Annie Cohen-Solal became a true mentor. She taught me how to dig deeper in my research, question the origin of everything, and be bolder in my thinking.
I’ve also been fortunate to have clients who have inspired me along the way. My friend and client Nikos Koulis has been an important voice in my career — both as a supporter, advising me along the way, and as someone whose own vision and dedication have pushed me to think bigger.
The art world is built on relationships, and I feel very lucky to have had mentors, peers, and clients whose trust, generosity, and insight have shaped my work.
