Today we’d like to introduce you to Art Streiber.
Art, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in Pacific Palisades. My grandparents lived nearby, and my grandfather was an avid amateur photographer who had his own darkroom. I showed an interest in photography in the sixth grade and started using my father’s Nikon F.
About two years later, my grandfather sold me and my brother a Canon AE-1 and a 50mm lens for $8. I took black and white pictures at school and developed, proofed and printed them in my grandfather’s darkroom. By my junior and senior year at Harvard School, I was the photo editor of the yearbook and the newspaper and worked at a small camera store in Pacific Palisades called Harrington’s Camera.
When I got to Stanford, I started shooting for the Daily paper almost immediately. I went on to become the photography editor of the Daily for four terms. The summer of my junior year I had an internship in the photography department at LIFE Magazine in New York City and the summer after I graduated I had an internship at the Riverside Press Enterprise.
I then did a traineeship in the photography department of the Westside Bureau of the LATimes. Subsequently, I became the staff photographer for WWD and W Magazine in Los Angeles and the co-bureau chief (sharing the title with my wife) of their offices in Milan, Italy.
After we moved back to Los Angeles in November of 1993, I started freelancing, and I have been a freelance editorial, entertainment and commercial photographer ever since.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s always a struggle in the creative world and especially in the freelance creative world. I have struggled to change my look, change my perception in the industry and keep my business afloat as professional photography migrated from film to digital and as the editorial world as shrunk over the last decade.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am a freelance photographer specializing in editorial, entertainment, and commercial portraiture. I am known for my portraiture of people of note; newsmakers and game changers, and my group portraiture. I am proud of my small, but incredibly talented staff and extremely proud when clients compliment us on our professionalism.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
-Growing up in Pacific Palisades and being able to ride my bike into town.
-Going to the Brentwood Mart.
-Going to the Hollywood Bowl and Dodger Stadium with my family.
-When our dog, a beagle named “Snoopy” would escape from our house and wander the two miles to our elementary school.
