Meet Arezou Yaghoubian of Aesthetica LA and LA Hand Institute in Tarzana

Today we’d like to introduce you to Arezou Yaghoubian.

Arezou, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in Iran and immigrated to the US by way of Italy in an ” Argo” type of story. I have lived in LA majority of my life and have wanted to be a doctor like my parents as long as I can remember. Graduated valedictorian of my high school. Went on to UCLA and received my B.S. and M.D. degrees. After completing medical school, I completed a general surgery residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. I continued my education with a fellowship in plastic and reconstructive surgery followed by an additional fellowship in orthopedic hand and microsurgery at UCLA. I have been very passionate about academics and have co-authored almost 50 manuscripts and book chapters. In addition to running my own private practice, I am currently a clinical instructor at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center’s Department of Plastic Surgery and the Los Angeles VA in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. I practice the full spectrum of plastic and reconstructive surgery, including hand surgery, aesthetic surgery, and breast reconstruction.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely not a smooth road, lots of nay sayers… first dealt with being a foreigner, English as 2nd language, then the challenges of being a petite girl in medicine and surgery both still very predominantly all male fields…

Aesthetica LA and LA Hand Institute – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a plastic and hand surgeon. I practice the full spectrum of both hand and plastic surgery including aesthetic medicine and surgery. I established my own practice this year and been growing it from the ground up which has had its own set of challenges as well as learning experiences.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is personally defined. For me, success is setting goals that may not seem attainable short term but with hard work and perseverance are achieved. Nothing good comes easy. Each day the limits change and my definition of success changes as I grow as an entrepreneur and a seasoned surgeon.
