Today we’d like to introduce you to April Solomon.
Thanks for sharing your story with us April. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Since I was a small child, the late hours of the night were a place of solace for me to draw and paint. Once the pencil hit the paper, I could be transported to that place of intimate connection between this waking reality and the realm of timeless fantasy.
Thankfully my family has always been supportive of me becoming an artist and I’ve had plenty or mentors, family, and friends to help guide me through the winding journey of life. I’ve had my struggles just like everyone, and to everyone the struggles are unique and make us who we are. For me it was the experience of: finding love, marriage, divorce, loss, addiction, expectations won and voided, dreams and wishes granted or still in the making and yet to be fulfilled that helped shape who and what I’m creating today. Currently, I exhibit my artwork at art conventions like Wonder-Con, Designer-Con, and Creative Talent Network. I’m also currently full filling my bachelor’s degree at the Laguna College of Art and Design in Laguna Beach California. I couldn’t be more grateful to have the love and support freely given from family and friends. Without it, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
I hope to continue to express what’s in my heart and produce that which brings me joy and meaning in this life through the process of creative manifestation.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Like chunky peanut butter. Sometimes smooth, sometimes chunky and hard to swallow. Alcoholism and drug Addiction is apart of my story and I’m not ashamed to admit it. I feel it’s important to talk about the fact that we all reach for things to make the internal pain subside. It’s taken me several years to get back to the one thing I’ve desired the most, my artwork. Today, I have seven years sobriety. Without this gift of sobriety, I wouldn’t be able to pursue the dreams I have in my heart. And I encourage others to talk about the struggles. Because for people like me, it’s only in the light of honesty can I began to heal and to grow into the person I’ve always dreamed of becoming.
Please tell us more about your art.
April Solomon Illustration’s & Fine Art is dedicated to the design and fabrication of magnificent mythical creatures. Through the use of traditional mediums such as: pencil, watercolor, gouache, acrylic, inks, and oils, a startling new design of fantasy can be conjured by joining flora, geometry, mineral and wildlife. This merging of elements found in nature produces the signature twist of realism and fantasy joined as one. Dragons are the spawn of this merging and has been the perfect birth child from my heart for these many years. The Dragon’s I bring to life holds no boundaries within their design, shape, size, and color. Like the universe, I believe these creatures to hold infinite possibilities and so shall their design expose exactly that which the Dragon represents for me, power, strength, guidance, wisdom, and love. I strive for something new and unforgettable through my Dragon’s. It’s important for me to use all of nature’s natural ferocious beauty and come up anatomical designs, shapes, and patterns that stand apart from the rest.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
After graduating from art college, I plan to explore and travel to destinations where I’m sure to discover Dragon’s, and hopefully a Werewolf or two. My two passion projects involve executing an illustrative novel, and the other involving an idea I’ve been sitting on for some time – and yes, it involves Dragon’s.
