Today we’d like to introduce you to April Nelson.
Hi April, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started singing “Take me out to the ballgame” and nursery rhymes well before my extremely pigeon-toed feet self-corrected. It was a part of me and I just wanted to sing and perform for anyone that would listen. I have to credit my mom for cultivating the work ethic behind the performance though. Because of the countless impromptu performances in nail salons, restaurants, nursing homes, churches, family gatherings, etc. I had so much practice that I grew out of the nervous, hypercritical phase and was just able to embrace it.
Training has been the foundation for everything. I was lucky enough to study music with so many wonderfully talented musicians in New Orleans (NOCCA, Le Petite) to Oklahoma City (OCU) to Los Angeles (Beverly Belles, Disney World Beat, Universal Studios Frog Choir, Vezer Family Vineyards and countless individual artists)
All of these influences prepared me for a voyage into carefully curated personal concerts and performances that I can only hope have brought some joy to people.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No. (That’s the word right there) Being said no to is a thing you just have to get used to. Eventually someone will say yes, so in the interim you just have to hone the craft and prepare for that next yes.
There’s also no road map to this gig. Especially in live performance, sometimes you just have to be open to many versions of opportunities and work and you’ll find the right people.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a singer, actor and host.
Over the last year, I’ve had the privilege to perform and tour with Disney World Beat in Japan, tour with The Fabulous Yachtsmen, tour my own show in the Suisun Valley, sing for the wonderful Sino-American CPA Association, and sing at Universal Studios as part of the Frog Choir in Harry Potter World. I feel truly blessed to have had these opportunities and will continue to strive to sing whenever and wherever I can.
What does success mean to you?
Success is being proud of the work you’ve done and knowing that there is always more to learn and more to explore. Success is not limiting yourself by your “job description” and being open to every opportunity.
