Meet Anthony Newen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Newen.

Anthony, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was 13 years old, I stumbled across a David Blaine magic video on YouTube. I got hooked on wonderment and devoted the next three years learning and practicing magic tricks. The magic unfortunately wore off for me and I had to find a new hobby to fill my time. I was already making magic videos that I would post to YouTube and show at my high school, so it felt like the natural progression was to fall into filmmaking. I watched a few films like Fight Club and Magnolia and realized the power and impact a film can have on me. And if a film impacted me so strongly, I saw how it could another person.

So I borrowed my dad’s camcorder and pulled some friends together and started to make short films. The more I made films, the more I grew to love and appreciate the art of filmmaking – deciding how lighting, sound, music, location, writing, and acting can serve the story I’m telling. My creativity was opened so wide thinking about filmmaking that I just couldn’t stop doing it. When I graduated high school, I made a feature-length film with my friends in Virginia and then moved out to Los Angeles at the age of 18.

Has it been a smooth road?
When I decided against college to move to Los Angeles at 18 years old, my parents were not very happy about it. I was young, naive, but full of determination. Moving to a new city without knowing anyone is painfully difficult and I don’t suggest it to anyone, but I felt I had to prove to myself that I could survive and make it on my own. I can say now I have successfully survived and even thrived in Los Angeles, but being so far from the support and love of family is extremely hard, and my films often touch on that subject.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Anthony Newen Productions is a production company started by myself after having worked on many productions and imagining how I could do things better and different. We make corporate and branded content videos for businesses and help them pinpoint their company’s purpose and why they want to serve their community. We always start with why a company does what it does and from there we find how to best construct a video that helps get that message across to their community. Our videos tend to have a heartfelt, soft, and warm vibe and we work with entrepreneurs that also look for that vibe in their company.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles is a very good city to run a production company. Companies from all over the world come to LA because this city is the hub for creating videos and content. The best of the best filmmakers from production assistants to producers come to LA to be surrounded by like-minded people. We help each other grow and encourage each other to be better than we were yesterday. Los Angeles also has all the film equipment and tangible things you could need for a successful production. There is no better or easier place to make videos than in Los Angeles.
