Meet Anthony J. Resta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony J. Resta.

Hi Anthony J., thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a gold and multiplatinum awarded record producer and composer. Some of my more well-known clients have included Duran Duran (30 songs including remixes), Elton John, Collective Soul (from “Dosage” on), l Guster, Blondie, Megadeth, Nuno Bettencourt, Shawn Mullins, and Perry Farrell. I started off as a drummer and drum programmer and became known for my sonic experimentation, vintage gear, and creating vast stereo soundcapes. I play guitars, flute, drums, bass, clarinet, keyboards, and anything I can get a rhythm or melody out of.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Reinventing myself several times in my 25 years as a full-time musician has not been a cakewalk. Since moving into our Laurel Canyon studio five years ago, I’ve been concentrating more on composing than making records.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I love working with young people and soaking up all the incredible ways they use new technology and new ways of doing things! My earliest influences were people like Bartok, Stravinsky, and Frank Zappa, so I always like to push boundaries and challenge the listener. I avoid generic music with a passion. Commercial music doesn’t have to be generic.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Empathy. As a producer or a composer, you are serving an artist or a director. It’s about their vision, not yours, and you have to keep that in mind at all times, without letting your ego get in the way. It has taken me a lot of years to learn how to be open to a vision other than my own!

Thanks for this great article! Been a fan of his production for years. One of those who has a distinct sonic fingerprint that’s instantly recognizable, even with diverse artists. A true “mugician”.
