Today we’d like to introduce you to Annie Jo.
Hi Annie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Girls Are Haha Funny was born during the pandemic. I noticed there was so much activism, awareness for equality, outcry for injustices to be atoned for, during this time. It seemed like everything changed and forced us all to become introspective and ask some deep questions about ourselves and the world around us. I was also so moved and impressed by the young generation of women who seemed to be so bold and fearless, demanding to be heard! I decided to create a store that pays homage to girls, women, feminists, and humanists, who are sassy, funny, and like to make a statement in their unique selves.
Comedy has historically been geared to a demographic which seemed to exclude young women’s intelligence, so this store is really about embracing that point of view and that attitude in this day and time. I am so deeply proud of all the hand-selected and designed products that are carried in the store, and I really hope all the products strike the belly laugh chord in people!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Looking back I would say it wasn’t always easy or smooth, but it’s definitely been rewarding to conquer fears of the unknown. It was scary to invest money into something that was just an idea in the beginning. It was also scary continuing to invest time into something that I wasn’t sure was going to pay off. Seeing customers react passionately about the products makes going through all the challenges worth it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My passion is writing and story-telling. I also really enjoy seeing everything through a “comedy” lens! I truly believe that laughter is medicine, and the world can always benefit from more. Being able to work with these shirts and products that have a distinctly feminist and comedic point of view is truly a dream. I’ve had such an incredible experience working with the designers and sourcing everything in the store!
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Just do it! Keep costs low, know that you will make some mistakes, and know that you can pivot directions at any point. No one starts out perfect – at least coming close to perfection comes with a lot of adjustment and lessons. Learning to market on social media has been a learning curve for me. I realize now that this is the way commerce interacts directly with their customers, and I think that has been huge for me to come to understand.
When I was starting out, I wish I knew how rewarding it would be to conquer my fears of the unknown. There are still days I don’t want to do something because it overwhelms me how little I know about the topic. But learning to organize tasks into bite-sized morsels has really helped me to stay on task and move forward.
