Meet Anna Vorontsova of ASV Studios in Downtown Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Vorontsova.

Anna, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I taught myself how to shoot film. I’ve been shooting ever since my father passed down his Soviet Union made manual film camera to me. It is a Zenit 12xp and is still one of my favorite cameras to use! Shooting in camera double exposure shots was always my specialty. After moving to LA, I naturally started shooting more professionally. Now I specialize in both film and digital and currently work as a Studio Image Manager in postproduction for the fashion industry.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Luckily it has been a smooth road. I’ve naturally always gravitated towards the photography and the image post production side for companies I have worked for. I think the biggest hurdle has been getting clients and getting them interested in film over a digital shoot. In addition, Los Angeles has a surplus of photographers. The competition is tough.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the ASV Studios story. Tell us more about the business.
I shoot both film and digital, but I specialize in film, 35 mm and medium format. I’ve always had a special kind of love towards the beauty film provides. It’s a dying art. It’s great that the industry standard is digital and anyone can do it now, but I think it’s important to keep film alive. It’s more than just shooting an aesthetically great photo, it’s about capturing the essence of the person, the spirit of the relationship, or the core of what the project wants to convey. I think film makes it more “personal” and natural. I also love playing with double exposure in camera. I think doing it in post-production spoils the fun of finding out how it turned out naturally.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Haha, clients are all about luck. Who you know and happen to meet in this industry. In Los Angeles you need a lot of luck!
