Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Lopes.
Hi Anna, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in a small town in Brazil, I’m 23 years old, and I started developing a passion for music when I was nine years old through my father and my brother who would teach me how to play guitar and I fell in love with it. Since then, I became really excited about drums as well and started doing drum lessons for a while. Soon enough, I was playing in a worship band in my hometown and that was always so much fun for me. As I got a little older maybe between 11-13 music was my favorite thing in the world. I couldn’t wait to get home from school, get my mp3 and start listening to music the whole for the rest of my day. One of the reasons I couldn’t get enough of music was because I had just discovered Taylor Swift at her speak now era and was crazy about her sound. That period was when I developed my main influences in music such as Taylor, Jonas Brothers, Coldplay, this Brazilian band called Rosa de Saron, and a couple of others.
Skip to a few years later on my teenage years, It was time to start thinking about what I would do for college. I’ve always knew I wanted to do something related to music but wasn’t sure what. And I also had this big desire to live in America and pursue my big dream of being able to work in the music industry in some way. In 2017 it was time for my senior year, I went to live in Tulsa, Oklahoma to finish school and to have a little taste of what it was like to live in the States and I loved it! I had my first songwriting and recording experience there where I was able to release my first song! In that same year I found out about Full Sail University in Florida and I decided that there was where I would like to attend and get a bachelor in music production because I wanted to be able to produce my own music. I attended Full Sail for two years from 2019-2021 and I learned so much!
I felt ready and I knew I had to keep going on my journey, so I decided to move to LA one month after I graduated. I’ve been living here since 2021 and It’s been great! I was lucky enough to be able to work in two very prestigious recording studios- Nightbird Recording Studios and Record Plant Recording Studios – I was an assistant/Runner for them and I was so excited! I started to get better in my production and recording skills and I’m thankful for everything I’ve learned with my co-workers. After that, I decided that I wanted to learn a little bit more about the music industry so I went back to college for a music business certificate at UCLA and it’s been great! Besides the school, I’m really focusing on my artist career at the moment and I really want to invest in it. I have a song coming out on June 23rd and from there I’ll just keep making more music!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the challenges that I had to go through was to be away from my family and because of that, not having a lot of people to laid down on. But besides that, I really had to fight against my insecurities about my music skills in general, but mainly my producer and singing skills because you’re always seeing people that could do better than you can. And coming from a small town in a country so far away where music is definitely not an encouraging career people will follow, you can’t help it but feel intimidated by all these people around you with so much talent and ready to achieve what they’re hungry for. My family was always very supportive, but that feeling of inferiority still follows me around from time to time. So the main challenge was to be able to find the strength to fight my insecurities by studying and learning a lot about my craft so I could be able to feel comfortable with my skills in any environment.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an artist and a music producer, I am more focused on producing my own music these days but I do have some experience making music for other people as well. I specialize in Folk/Country/Pop and I believe I’m known as the girl from Brazil who curiously enough sings country/Folk music. I’m really proud of my previous released songs, which of course were experiments to try and find my sound, but I feel like I had some progress and I’ve started to figure that out. As I kept writing in producing I was able to slowly discover what my music will sound like and for the next two tracks I’ll be releasing soon, people will feel the taste of what that is. What sets me apart from others I believe is that combination of me as a Brazilian singing country/pop music. I don’t think people see that every day and I think that’s different. If I’m already flattering myself I can also say I’m a very happy person that always have a big smile on her face and have a dream to be able to spread that joy of life to the world. Prove to everyone that it doesn’t matter where you come from, if you follow your dreams, you’ll be surprised where it can take you.
What matters most to you?
What matters the most to me is to be able to spread happiness and the feeling of compassion for people with my art. As if every time someone listens to my songs, they’ll feel hugged. And that their feelings are valid and nothing else matters in that moment. I want to make everyone feel like they have a warm safe space where they can just press play and feel loved after having a bad day or is going through a bad period. Like a therapy where people can connect with their feelings and understand that it will be okay. They’re not alone.
