Today we’d like to introduce you to Anjali Rajpal.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Anjali. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up in the suburbs of Michigan as a first-generation Indian-American. My father was a general surgeon who came to the US for his residency and my mother became a financial planner later in life. Because of the influence of medicine on my life, and following a similar course as my sister who became an oncologist, I was on the premedical path. However, I had a strong interest in art as well, as my mother had paintings of her up all over our house.
I had always taken different art classes and knew that I had to have a creative element incorporated into whatever career path I chose. I was torn between medicine and art while I was in college and wished I could find a career that blended both. My friend who was premedical but then became a fashion designer recommended that I look into dentistry because it involved an artistic component while working with your hands. My father was obviously great with his hands as a surgeon, and I loved crafting things so I found it to be a good fit.
I attained my DMD degree from Tufts School of Dental Medicine and then I completed my general practice residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center which is what led me to LA. I find cosmetic dentistry to be a perfect fit for me because I get to use my artistic eye while designing smile makeovers and in every case analysis.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It always takes a while to find a way to practice at the caliber and in the style you want to provide the absolute best care for your patients. My first few jobs as an associate weren’t exactly the right places for me long term but they gave me great experience and provided a foundation and contrast for how I wanted to practice.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Beverly Hills Dental Arts story. Tell us more about the business.
Beverly Hills Dental Arts is my general and cosmetic dental practice. I enjoy creating smile makeovers using a combination of porcelain restorations and Invisalign. For me, the most important part of smile design is making sure that my patients walk out with teeth that suit them and that look natural. Many of my patients that get a full set of veneers have smiles that look so natural that when they meet their peers or coworkers, often times they hear compliments on their new look but their peers can’t figure out that it’s their teeth that they had done.
I also been referred to as the Diamond Dentist, because I have been using my artistry to bejewel teeth with gems that make their smiles shine and stand out even more. My patients walk out of my office so excited to have something fun and interesting added to their smiles.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I guess luck happens as you follow your intuition along your path. I basically just followed the stepping stones as I moved around and ended up working with other practitioners along the way. I learned different skill sets and styles of practice from each one. One of the most influential was a holistic dentist who opened me up to different modalities of healing both physically and spiritually.
I feel lucky to have been accepted into some of the best schools and learning institutions and to be part of several study clubs in Beverly Hills where I have been exposed to the latest techniques and technology and can constantly learn from other doctors with their own experiences. I feel lucky that I have the freedom to practice in the style that I choose to practice and that I get to form relationships with all of my patients who have interesting personalities because it makes working fun.
