Meet Angela Rodriguez of Angie Mitchell Fitness in Echo Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Rodriguez.

Angela, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m an independent personal trainer in the Los Angeles area. As a 31 year young woman, I spend my time guiding clients to a healthy balanced diet, educate clients on proper form throughout their workouts and overall maintain a positive mindset during the hardships we may face in life.

Throughout my adolescent years, I played basketball which kept me very active. My dad was my coach through my jr high years until I began playing on the high school team. My passion for basketball was motivated by watching Michael Jordan play and bonding over it with my dad, who played on in El Salvador.

My physical activity came to a halt, as my personal life collapsed. I was thrown into a world with no safety net. It was either survive or survive, no option to fail. Working two part-time jobs while going to school kept me in a high state of stress. I neglected my health both physical and mental. I sunk into a dark time in my life, using the wrong coping mechanisms to get me through. I drastically dropped weight from high stress and malnutrition. My family was concerned about my health while many others advised me to seek help. This was a pivotal point in my life. I had to choose to continue down a path that was not serving me or make a severe change.

So I did what most people do, I got a gym membership (ha!) I decided I wanted to gain back my weight in a healthy way. Through trial and error, I managed to gain the weight back and some! A few years later, after an outdoor trip, I was looking for myself in a picture and couldn’t find myself. I didn’t recognize myself due to my weight gain. So, back to the drawing board, I went. At this point in my life, I was in search of feeling good in my skin. This was a journey of 5 years, self-educated, and very experimental. At this time, many friends & family noticed my results and encouraged me to do it as a profession.

Fast forward to the present time, I’ve been a personal trainer and health mentor for six years. My passion lies in helping people. Taking the time to truly understand their needs and goals and pushing them to their fullest potential with plausible solutions.

What is your purpose in life? What do you want out of life? Who do you want to become? We hear these questions often by the ones we love and society. When we don’t have answers, they can become overwhelmingly stressful. My advice to that is, just start doing something! Anything! Make moves and you will figure it out along the way. Through movement, I’ve created a happy life. No longer fearing the possibilities of failure as I understand it’s all a part of life. When we fail, we learn and when we learn, we grow.

Like Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “…the only thing we have to fear is…fear itself.”

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Challenges: weight loss, weight gain, family trauma, temporary loss of home.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Currently, I’m focused on growing my online business through programs. My business encompasses all of the wellness, from movement, nutrition & meditation.
