Meet Angela Means of Jackfruit Cafe in DTLA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Means.

Angela, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Jackfruit café started inside of a donut shop on Crenshaw just a mile or so from Nipsey’s store at Slauson and Crenshaw. I had to know if the hood wanted vegan so much I paid the ridiculous 4K a month to rent the space. The two partners in the donut shop thought I’d last only a couple months not realizing I’m actually a farm girl and will work 15 hours a day with no problem. After four months lines were coming out of both doors at the six-month mark they asked us to leave. A few restauranteurs stepped up and made some offers to partner with our intellectual property and recipes but nothing really worked out, just a bunch of conversation with people trying to take advantage, so to keep the brand going and the creativity strong we jumped in a food truck.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My bright eyed and bushy tailed ass thinks everyone cares about the environment, animals and their health but it’s just not the case. We’ve had the police called on us and I’ve received threats. Being a HoodCelebrityy people call all the time and giggle on the phone or just sit on the phone and breathe to hear Felicia say “hello hello hello hello”. Lol. It just comes with the territory. It’s a new landscape so we get a lot of ignorant debate from those set in their ways who continue producing the results of harmful propaganda. Harmful propaganda produces illness factory farming and environmental dangers.

Jackfruit Cafe – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We’re a vegan food brand I’m most proud of what we serve it’s fast it’s convenient it’s transitional food. Our tacos are extremely healthy you can have them every day I wouldn’t suggest eating fried foods every day Like our delicious cauliflower wings but our tacos are the bomb and they never get tired. I think the only thing that really sets us apart because we’re just like everyone else we’re out here in these streets but we are vegan and we do have an owner that’s a HoodCelebrityy lol.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment was a review on our Instagram account stating that we had change someone’s life Made me cry.
