Meet Angela Loh-Chien of Sweetteapie Confections

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Loh-Chien.

Hi Angela, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I immigrated from Malaysia when I was two years old, carrying with me-though I didn’t know it then-the quiet, lasting imprint of my Malaysian-Chinese heritage. By day, I’m an occupational therapist working in physical rehabilitation. I’m also a proud mom of two boys, one grown and one in the heart of his teen years.
Through my work as an occupational therapist supporting individuals following injury, neurological condition, or surgery, I’ve come to deeply value life’s small victories and importance of embracing each opportunity while we can.
Food, for me, has always been more than sustenance-it is memory, comfort and connection. In our family, food and travel have been the threads that tie us together. During the stillness of the pandemic, our kitchen became our sanctuary. With no formal training, my husband, boys and I found unexpected joy experimenting with flavors and recipes. That time brought us closer-pulling my boys out of their rooms and into moments of laughter, conversation, and shared discovery. The kitchen became our therapy.
At the same time, I came to recognize a long-held passion: creating beautiful, intentional experiences that bring joy. Whether it was crafting a themed event, handcrafted favors, or adding meaningful little touches, I found happiness in celebrating others.
With encouragement from loved ones, I took a leap and began weaving all these passions together-my love for food, tea, heritage, creativity, and celebration-into a small business born from the heart.
Now, as I approach 50, I see this journey as more than a creative outlet. It’s a reminder that it’s never too late to start something new-especially when it’s rooted in love, memory and the simple hope of bringing joy to someone’s day.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting this side business has been one of the most rewarding-but also challenging. Balancing this small business alongside a full time career as an occupational therapist and being present for my family, it can be hard to find time for rest and play. As someone who helps others strive for balance in their lives, I’ve been reminded to do the same-setting boundaries and doing things one step at a time.
Coming from a non-business background, I had to learn everything from the ground up-marketing, social media, legal requirements and food safety regulations. It was a steep learning curve, but each challenge became an opportunity to grow and gain confidence in this new space.
But through it all, with every hurdle, I was reminded that even approaching 50, you can still learn and grow, showing
my kids and myself that it’s never too late to follow your passion and create something meaningful.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Sweetteapie Confections?
