Meet Angela Kim

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Kim.

Hi Angela, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a second-generation Korean American, born and raised in Koreatown-Los Angeles. Hairdressing is my profession and I’ve been working in the beauty industry for thirteen years now. Growing up, my interests revolved around art. I loved painting and drawing as a kid. In general, I’ve always enjoyed making things with my hands. In high school, I found interest in beauty, fashion, and music. After graduating high school, I enrolled into a Cosmetology program. But I dropped out because I wasn’t sure if it was right for me. I took a three-year break and eventually went back to school again. I had the best time in beauty school. I’ve worked in a couple of different salons in the LA area for most of my career. In 2020, I opened my own independent hair business in central Hollywood.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I started my own business around the beginning of the pandemic so it was challenging at first. Salons were shut for most of 2020. Things started looking up in the following year. It’s been great having my own private workspace. Navigating things on my own has been a huge learning curve but I find a lot of joy in what I do. I am always striving for growth as an individual and as an artist. I’ve learned that there will always be room for improvement when running a business. So it’s okay if things don’t work out as planned at first. When things get challenging, I try to remind myself why I started this in the first place. I’m very thankful for my clients and their support throughout my career. They play a huge part in all of it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Currently, I offer haircuts and color services. I curated my service offerings with eco-friendly/non-toxic haircare products and a low-toxic color line. This was one of the main reasons why I wanted to start my own business in the first place. I was experiencing some health issues the year prior which eventually lead me to learn about toxicity in cosmetics/beauty products and everyday household items. Transitioning to an independent hairstylist was the best way to align my personal beliefs with my work. I just wanted to offer safer and cleaner options for my clients. Cool, effortless, textured and flowy cuts are my specialty. My goal is to help my guests achieve a style they look and feel their best in. Most of all I enjoy collaborating with my clients and creating something special just for them. I encourage people to explore and have fun with their hairstyles.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
If it scares you, you’re probably doing something right. You will always learn something from any experience. Feeling unsure or intimidated when doing something for the first time is completely normal. The only way to find out anything is to try things out. Invest in yourself through education and always make time to explore. Try to find a balance in your personal time and work. Create meaningful connections with friends and mentors that can help and support you in your life and career journey.
