Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Faith.
Angela, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in Washington, DC to a loving family. My dad is a pastor so it’s safe to say my love for music grew from the church. I use to sing in the children’s choir when I was young, and that lead me to attend Duke Ellington School of the Arts and later received a large scholarship to go to Berklee College of Music where I received my BA in Music Business and Management and Performance. I’ve sung with Sting, Patti Labelle, Ledisi, and Gallant, just to name a few people and I’ve had the opportunity to perform on Good Morning America, BET, and TVOne. I started an online vocal studio called Sing Like a Pro (SLAP) and just this month, I had the incredible honor of co-writing and performing a song for “The Call to Unite” a fundraiser for COVID 19 that was headlined by Oprah.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Well in short, no. I did not have a smooth road. Like I said earlier, I have a loving family that excepted me as is but most of my life, I didn’t fit in with my peers. In high school, I was a massive nerd. I had straight A’s, I was top of my class, but I was always made fun of for “trying too hard” at school or my normally cheerful disposition. I thought when I got to college, it would be a lot better. A lot easier to just fit in and have a place I knew I belonged but I’ve never really felt that at any time during college. But it toughed me up, I had to learn that in this industry people don’t have to like you. You don’t have to fit a cookie-cutter profile of how people think you should look and behave. If you hustle hard enough and you take the time to hone your craft and ignore all of the haters and gossipers that are trying to get in your head, they will have to respect you. Your talents will make room for you.
Please tell us about Sing Like a Pro (SLAP).
Sing Like a Pro (SLAP) is an Online Vocal Studio dedicated to teaching the young and the young at heart the proper way to sing! I teach aspiring singers proper vocal technique and I groom them to be able to perform with skill and excellence. I’m very proud of how the company has grown so far and how this LLC was born out of such hardship. I’ve always wanted to start my own business but I honestly thought it would be later in life, but when the pandemic hit and I was laid off with millions of other people, I was pinned against a rock and a hard place. I had no idea what to do until one of my old students from a past studio contacted me and asked me to give him lessons. I couldn’t say no. So I jumped at the opportunity and I formed the studio. What sets my studio apart from all of the other studios is my method of teaching. When I’m teaching a private lesson, I go in with the understanding that one size does not fit all so the way I teach one student will never mirror the next. I make sure that my students leave my studio with a sense of pride and accomplishment that will then motivate them to study harder.
Currently, I having a website built for Sing Like a Pro LLC, but until then if you would like to make an appointment, please email [email protected].
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck? I believe in answered prayers. Every success I’ve received so far, I prayed for it straight up. Faith and hard work will get you a long way in life.
