Meet Angel Yang of Let’s Paint in Little Tokyo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Yang.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Angel. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I originally studied marketing in undergrad but a 9-5 job was not appealing to me and I felt lost upon graduation. So, I decided to teach English in Korea for a year to save money and to travel in Southeast Asia. After living in Korea, I took art lessons there and my buried passion for art was rekindled. I always loved art and painting but never believed I could be a professional artist. However, I often found that painting was very stress relieving and fun; moreover, I had a passion for teaching and that’s how I started Let’s Paint. Intuitively, I combined what was fun and my passion into one. What’s more is that, as of recent, I am an Art Therapist MFT in training. I am currently pursuing my masters because I love what art can do in peoples’ lives. Eventually, I want to share the power of art therapy with everyone, professionally.

Has it been a smooth road?
It wasn’t a smooth road and there were several challenges I had to overcome. It was hard to reach customers from the beginning.

Everyone was interested in the idea of painting but it was a challenge to get them to come. With consistency and networking, we were able to build a steady base of clients who wanted to paint.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Let’s Paint story. Tell us more about the business.
Let’s Paint realizes everyone is an artist and we inspire people to unleash their creative side. Art is a therapeutic, relaxing, and enjoyable addition to the daily life. Let’s Paint creates a fun and cozy ambiance to unlock hidden talents and creativity. It’s a fun night of painting and drinking while spending quality time with friends, family, or your significant other.

Let’s Paint explores different painting techniques with tools such as sponges, glow-in-dark paint, glitter, and more. Customers are immersed in a comfortable and relaxed environment with an experienced painting instructor. The instructor will give easy instructions for painters of all levels including customers without any experience in painting. Most importantly, we encourage people to be different and be freely creative when painting.

We provide private parties for company events, team building, other special occasions, and even date nights. We currently added private portrait painting sessions so you can paint your significant other or even yourself. So, you can have a fun night of painting and take home a gift or wall decoration. These unique experiences and offerings sets us apart from other companies because we cater to match the perfect painting activity for each party.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Painting and art, in general, is growing in popularity amongst people for leisure but also as a therapeutic experience. I imagine art services being provided on many different scales and levels to meet the dimensions of human creativity, expressions and needs. Art is more hands-on and therapeutic, which is necessary in contrast to the world of the ever fast growing digital boom.

In the near future, people will be able to take weekly lessons to improve painting techniques and skills, work on imaginative projects, or just come whenever they would like to do something colorful and fun. Also, people will see the benefits of being expressive using original arts, and see the importance of self-expression and also self-care. Therapy will become the next trend and therapy with art is a great way to exercise self-care and mental health. People will discover new elements of themselves through therapy/counseling sessions using art as a medium.
