Meet Angel Reeves of The Golden Nurse

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Reeves.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a Michigan Nurse who specializes in Hemodialysis and Critical Care. I chose to enter the healthcare after witnessing my grandmother’s health diminish abruptly. It completely broke my heart. While visiting her in the hospital, I noticed the care for black patients wasn’t as urgent as the care for nonblack patients. I didn’t understand it and I certainly didn’t appreciate it. From there, I made it my duty to become a nurse so that I could take care of people specifically black people to help be their advocate for the best healthcare as possible. It’s what we deserve. My love for helping people as a nurse inspired me to give back to my community as well. I started my nonprofit organization called The Golden Nurse Org whose goal is strictly community giveback. I have a passion for helping people in all aspects and any way that I can.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road but it has been worth it. You have someone’s life in your hands every single day. It is very precious. I do everything I can until the last second of my shift for my patients without any half stepping.

Please tell us about The Golden Nurse.
Being a mother and a nurse I am naturally nurturing. With that passion it helped me develop my nonprofit organization whose mission is to solely give back to the community. From feeding and clothing the less fortunate, to hosting a large community baby shower for mothers in need, to also hosting a Flint water drive in which we were able to donate close to 1,000 cases of water. I don’t do any of this for the recognition. However, it does makes it worth it when you’re impact is felt in the community.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Hmmm, I would have to say playing sports. I loved traveling with my teammates and winning with them. It was a sisterhood and still is after 15 years. I enjoyed it so much.
