Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Hollyfield.
Angel, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur but I didn’t know what it was that I wanted to do. In 2017, I started working in a dermatology office and they had estheticians working there. I realized that the estheticians did more than just waxing and that you could be your own boss being an esthetician. In 2018, I was looking on Instagram and came across someone’s page who was doing body contouring training. Right then and there I knew what I wanted to do as far as being an entrepreneur. An esthetician and body contouring tech. I took the body contouring training in April 2019 and opened Heavenly Body & Skin in June 2019. I enrolled in esthetician school as well but it was a lot of setbacks happening plus Covid hitting. I was determined to go to esthetician school and I went back in September 2020. So today I am an esthetician and body contouring tech. I was working at the dermatology office in 2018 and doing door dash on the side to help me get things for my business. I borrowed less than $500 from my mom, grandmother, and brother to help me get things going. Once I opened in 2019 I was working my business in the evenings after working my 9-5. In fall 2020 I decided to quit my 9-5 and pursue working my business full time.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has definitely not been a smooth road. Being an entrepreneur you don’t realize everything you have to go through. I was supposed to start esthetician school fall of 2019 but the school got shut down. Then I was supposed to get enrolled into school in March 2020 but then Covid happened. I was determined to go back to school. I finally got enrolled and started esthetician school in September 2020. I did not realize I have to wear all hats being an entrepreneur, marketing, making content on social media, photographer, and much more. I hit a slow season last year fall 2021 and I was not used to that. I got depressed because I didn’t know what to do because 2021 was my first full year working full-time as an entrepreneur. I reached out to my mentor who really encouraged me to get out of the depression and to push myself to put my all back into my business. So the whole perceptive that people portray of being an entrepreneur you’re always going to make money is not true. I’ve had days or weeks where I was slow and barely making any money. I have my times where I’m booked busy. I learned that you have to find ways to make money even when business is slow. I added on more services and started making body scrubs.
As you know, we’re big fans of Heavenly Body & Skin. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Heavenly Body & Skin is a beauty bar spa. I offer body contouring which is a non-invasive and non-surgical way of losing inches instead of doing liposuction. I do post-op massages which are massages that clients need after getting liposuction, tummy tuck and bbl. I do waxing, relaxation massages, facials and vajacials. My clients can come into my establishment and relax. I make homemade body scrubs which are really good for the skin. I have two kinds of body scrubs and people love them.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I am always willing to learn. It doesn’t not matter how much you know, always keep learning. You can never learn too much being an entrepreneur. Even on my bad days, I will not give up.
