Meet Andy Nsiele of Accelerated Radio’s “The TakeOver” in Inglewood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andy Nsiele.

Andy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It all started with a conversation I had with my older sister while I was in college. I was a sophomore at Cal State LA majoring in Music aspiring to be a music producer. While conversing with my sister about career goals and endeavors, she mentioned interning at a radio station could be a great experience and a way to get your foot in the door within music. The light bulb popped over my head and I felt that the idea was great, although radio was never in my radar. I just always knew that I enjoyed listening to the radio growing up and listening to my favorite R&B and Hip Hop songs. I grew up listening to the likes of Theo, Kevin Nash, Big Boy, Tito, The Baka Boyz, DJ A-One and Spinderella, Steve Harvey, Felli Fel, Dominique DiPrima, PJ Butta, and many more who were the voice of urban media in L.A. Not knowing what I was getting myself into nor did I have a plan as to what I wanted to do within radio, I secured an internship with what was then known as 100.3 The Beat within their promotions department.

Then a couple of years later, I secured an internship with Power 106/Movin 93.9 in their Traffic Department. A year later, I secured another internship as a line producer with a show called “The Beautiful Struggle” aired on 90.7 KPFK. While interning, I’m still a full-time student but changed my major to business while working at a local non profit. From 2005-2009 was the duration of time while interning at those respective radio stations. Fly all the way to 2013 when the stars aligned by a job opportunity arising for me as an after school program coordinator teaching kids how to do their own radio show with real equipment and their material actually being played on air online. The instructor of the program just so happened to be Kevin Nash, who you can hear nightly on KJLH 102.3 Monday thru Friday.

This program that he has been doing for some time now at that point was called Accelerated Radio. After a couple of months working with him and the kids, he decided to expand his program into an actual full-fledged radio station and the rest is history. Initially I had no interest on being on air as I was comfortable being behind the scenes promoting the station. An opportunity arised for all the interns at the time to host a show together on the network. I agreed to be apart of the show as I was challenging myself to step out of my comfort zone in order to dig deep within my soul to discover any other passions that I may have. Needless to say, I’ve made the right decision as my passion for radio as grown tremendously. “The TakeOver” has been on air for six years now on the Accelerated Radio Network and I don’t plan to stop!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. We initially started with seven personalities including myself. I think with any production/broadcast, having that many personalities, that many ego’s, that many different approaches we were bound to clash. As any resilient group, we still managed to provide great content for years. During the process though, people started to fall off little by little to the point where I was by myself. I held it down by myself for about a month or so until I brought on a colleague of mine (G-Lo Smoove) within the network to tag team with me. Months later, he got into some circumstances that prevented him from being apart of the show. Once I was by myself again, I brought in a great friend from who I knew since college and has seen around at other networks at the time (Big Homie Quan) and we’ve been riding ever since! After about a year hiatus G-Lo Smoove returned and now the “Triple Threat” has been the “New” TakeOver for the past two years.

Please tell us about Accelerated Radio’s “The TakeOver”.
Accelerated Radio is an online radio station headquartered in Inglewood, CA.

I am a host, soundboard engineer, social media manager, and customer service specialist.

I am most proud that Accelerated Radio provides a platform for the “average joe” aspiring to be in media/broadcasting to “flex” their muscles and live a dream that may seem impossible.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Gotta thank Kevin Nash! From growing up listening to him to actually working with him has been a surreal experience. Also, thanks to the network of non-profit professionals with whom I’ve worked with over the years. If it wasn’t for those experiences, I don’t think the opportunity to work with kids and radio would’ve matched together. This trajectory then lent itself to actually having my own radio show.
