Meet Andy James of Sally Hershberger Salon in West Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andy James.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Andy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My journey started at a little hole in the wall beauty school in Rosemead, CA. I knew at 16 years old that hair was my passion. In an effort to find a “home” in the salon world, I got the opportunity to start an apprenticeship at Sally Hershberger Los Angeles, where I worked under some of the best colorists in the world. Fast Forward almost a decade later, I’m now a senior colorist and head of apprentice color education and making hair dreams come true one head at a time.

Has it been a smooth road?
So many struggles! My apprenticeship was four years long. On an assistant budget, I lived far from the salon. Being in LA, we all know traffic is just horrible. 1.5 hour commute each way five days a week for years was one of the biggest challenges I faced. The first year finally being able to take my own clients was such a challenge too! I had to start from 0 and build. I became a “yes” man. I didn’t care how early or how late I was gonna do some hair.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Sally Hershberger Salon – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I’m a colorist. I specialize in blonding hair, after all it is LA! I’m known for my sun-kissed balayage and fantasy pastel colorwork and my “tower Foils” I think that what sets me apart from others is that I’m very open to learning from absolutely everyone, from the newest intern to the star colorist or the salon, there’s always something to learn. Which is why my technique keeps evolving.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I like best about LA is that trends are started here, we have the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, what I like least is definitely the TRAFFIC!
